Cool What happened to the diesels?????

HOLY GRILLED CHEESUS!!!

Since we are thinking about going full time for a year, and we're looking at bigger trailers, I was looking into a bigger truck.

3/4 ton anything is 50K+ in a diesel. And thats for the stripped down, no frills versions. Anthing with a convenience is 60-70K+.

At this point, I'm thinking that we'll just have to keep our Chevy 1500 5.3 V8 and regear the thing to 3.73's and stay under 10K pounds.

And we can forget ever having a 5th wheel I guess.

Inflation and the price of popularity. My 2007 Dodge 2500HD Cummins Mega-Cab Laramie with every option came in at $42,000. I'd hate to price it now.

I agree! New diesel 3/4T and 1T pickups are outrageously priced. Todays new pickups with a gas engine are made for fuel mileage instead of hauling/towing capacity, as seen in their specs.

I still have my 02 Chevy Duramax dually, LB, CC, from when we had a 40' 5er. Trouble is, the NADA price is $26,000, and I can't take that money and replace my truck with a 3/4T gas engine pickup. Manufacturers have you on both ends, sell to us high, buy from us low.
Have you considered used? There are several specialized used pickup dealers that seem to have decent pricing.
You might find a used diesel pickup that suits your need. IMO, stay away from a diesel that's been "bombed". Souped-up to us older folks.

Hadn't looked at used.

Most of the trailer we are looking at for the year we'll be in it can be pulled from the dealership to our park with our 1500, but if we want to eventually travel with it we'll have to upgrade the rear end to the 3.73. Right now we have the 3.08 which limits us to 6800lbs.

I'd rather just pay the $1500 to regear the rear end than jump into a 60k dollar truck.

Gees.

I was faced with that same problem. Our Superduty is 15 years old, we are nearing retirement. Add a new nice 5'er and you easily exceed $100k.

We bought a 7-8 year old diesel pusher. Spent less, and we should be good to go for a while. I will run my old Superduty as my work truck around here local runs. Not towing the RV it should last a good while.

This is why the fiver/huge travel trailer market is all but dead. If it can't be towed with a half ton most people are not interested.

It's certainly limiting us right now.

I think your assertion is in error. Gas engine 1/2 ton pickups have more power than ever, with many well over 350 HP. My 2013 F150 has 365 HP and 420 pounds of torque. Chevy has a 420HP-460 pound torque gas engine available in their 1/2 ton truck.

And payloads are also higher than ever, with the new F150 having payload packages of over 3000 pounds available. New standard suspension F150 crewcabs I've seen at dealers have payloads over 1800 pounds.

Met a guy with a fairly new Dodge 2500 cummins last month while camping. Said he picked it up new in the low $40s. Not a base model, but no leather etc. it was a crew cab with 4 doors and looked pretty nice. I assume deals are out there, but it is a very overpriced market due to demand.

A new base model F350 diesel runs $42,995, according to Ford's website. List. That comes with AC and a radio. Add $390 if you want a locking rear axle. That'll get you where you want to go.

The list price should not be what you pay. Take a look at internet sales through dealers. We bought our last truck from a dealer 100 miles away from us for thousands less than the local dealers wanted.

My neighbor just got a new Dodge 3/4 ton 4 door and it is not a stripper, looks nice. She got in for $43,000 plus the taxes they rip you with. She got rid of her Ford and got this to pull her horse trailer around.
