Question What is it??

Hi,
My name is Chuck and my wife and I own a 2011 Flagstaff Micro Lite by Forest River ( 21ft ). This is the second year that we have had it. This year we noticed a reddish-brown line coming out of a round thing- a- ma- jig ( don't know what else to call it ) in the shower surround ( see photos- I hope ). I don't know if these things are fasteners for the shower surround or maybe caps over fasteners. The funny thing is that this stuff weeps form the button when it gets very Hot. It's not rust. Could it be a mastic used to fasten the surround to the wall??Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks

Chuck

Pry off the caps and check the screws. It looks like a rust stain.

I would say rust, the "round thing- a- ma- jig" is a screw cover.

Agree they are screw covers which will just pop off if you pry under them with a table knife or flat blade screwdriver. Most likely rust stains. Remove the screws one at a time and replace them with same size screw in stainless steel.

Thank you for the quick replies. The shower has never been used so rust from where and why only on very hot days, and only one screw cap!

Looks to be almost the same color as the adjoining wall. Is it stickey? Time for the taste/smell test. Still think I would pull that screw out. Any chance there is a water line behind it or maybe a vent or seam in the roof above that might have leaked.

What is it?

Just a update. The cap is Not a cap. It's a screw in fastener. Found this out after multiple attempts at pulling it off . The threads had a reddish-brown material in them. No metal screw present. Swabbed the hole with a Q-tip and got nothing back. Am now seeking a replacement fastener. I truly wonder if F.R. used some kind of adhesive along with the plastic screw- in fastener to fasten the shower surround to the RV walls.
