What is the purpose of the heavy flat covers that fit in the sink?

They are actually in the way most of the time. I can't figure out their purpose, and why they are in the trailer in the first place.

What's their purpose?

Can be used as extra counter space or a device to hide dirty dishes.

So, no "real" purpose?

I stored them in the bottom drawer on our last trip. When I got home, I could not open the drawer, and had to take the top drawer completely out, then try to get the bottom one out. These covers are so heavy that they actually popped the bottom of the drawer out, and these and the drawer's bottom were sitting on the floor under the drawer.

Had to pull it all out and re-assemble everything, and use heavier screws to hold it all together.

We usually leave them in place when travelling,
but as soon as we get stopped, they are stored standing up between the sofa and cabinet where they are hidden.

I don't like them and consider them "in my way." DW likes them installed while she's using the counter when she sews.

As stated, they provide additional counter space.

Additional counter space.

Traveling we put both in place. When using we most often have just one in place. Sometimes both In place when DW is sewing or crafting.

The flexibility is a plus.

Simply for extra counter space, just as many cooktops have a cover on them for the same reason. When we are traveling, the covers are in place on the sink, and the drying basket is in one sink. For storage after the trip is over, the basket stays in the sink, the ice trays go in the other side of the sink and the covers go on.

they really are only there to be sold to the public as a 'benefit', when in reality it's only a byproduct of the counter cutout to install the sink. Manufacturers use this as a supposed selling tool, tho many of us have the same response - they just get in the way and require somewhere to store something else. My house also came with these when the contrator installed our kitchen counters - would have never thought about needing them there either, but for some reason it's a benefit in an rv?
Why is the sink itself not better storage when traveling than on the top of these inserts?
Ours was removed and stored from day one and have never since seen the light of day - but, to each his own!

If you don't like them, throw them away and be done with it.

A marketing tool. Just look at dealer photos of the galley areas. You think "Wow! look at all that counter space!!!". Then you buy it, the covers come off the sink & the cover is unhinged from the cooktop. Then you think "Crap! look at what little counter space I have".

I mean really, throw them away or put them in the garage or basement.

I did not want to toss them until I figured out their purpose. We are new at this, and I would hate to be out somewhere and finally go "AHA! That is what those things were for!" and not have them with me when I need them.

Since they are really not needed, they will go into storage next time I am over there.

Since we have a dishwasher, we very seldom ever use the left sink (the one closest to the rear of the mh) and keep it covered all the time for the extra counter space....same with the stove top as we usually bbq outside. We also have the pull out cabinet (with three drawers in it) that has extra counter surface on top of it. So unlike our previous mh, both of us can be utilizing the kitchen at the same time. This mh has a built-in storage slots in the cabinet under the sink to store both sink tops if needed.

I'm with others, if you don't need the extra counter space, git rid of the tops.
