Looking for a Solution ..........
I'm 6-3, have to bend over when walking under the front of my fifth wheel. Also often have a ball cap on so don't see where I'm going when bent over. This has caused several head bruises and recently a trip to the hospital for 9 stitches after "walking" into the hitch. I don't expect fewer senior moments at 76, so am looking for a solution. Maybe foam pipe insulation glued around the sharp edges of the hitch? Maybe 3/4 or 1 inch metallic tubing welded over all sharp edges? Anything easier/better?

I wouldn't drain that oil and let that crank sit there dry?

It doesn't, I am just to cold to spend the time adding 18 quarts of oil and the old oil will not be real warm when I start draining it. Leaving it drain all winter will hopefully remove most contaminants as a hot oil change.

The crankshaft never sets in oil unless someone grossly over filled the engine. So draining the pan or not, the oil remaining on the bearing journals will be the same. This is why starting the engine is the most damaging time in its life. Larger engines I worked on in the Navy had a pre-lub system we used prior to each start unless it was an emergency start on the generator like an instant loss of power then we had no control of the starting and no power to run the pre-lub pumps anyway.

The reason the crank is above the oil is so it doesn't whip it up into a foam. Like whipping anything, it adds air to the liquid. Air in the oil will effect pressures and lubrication thruout the engine. Some engines also have windage trays in the pan to prevent the air movement, from the spinning crank, from stirring the oil.

It was like that when I bought it. I saw the dent no leaks just a concern that the pickup tube may be damaged.

Yeah don't leave it open to drain all winter real bad idea. you will invite critters and dirt and the worst will be moisture and rust.
You will do less damage just leaving the oil in there.
