In my previous post I mentioned buying the new EMS PT30X Portable RV Surge Suppressor. I thought, "Wouldn't it be nice to actually try it out BEFORE we head down the coast?".
So over to Lowes, bought the 30 AMP outside box and installed it.
Of course I had to find an unused 30 AMP circuit which I did. So it should be an easy install!
Details.....always pay attention to the details...sigh.
Ran the 10 gauge existing wire to the outside, hooked up the box, attempted to measure the voltage but the probe's I had on the DVM didn't quite fit into the openings and I was unable to get any reading. No problem, I'll just plug in my EMS and see what I get.
E05 Error: Line 2 High Voltage.
Hmm, went back down and actually LOOKED at the circuit breaker...it's actually TWO breakers tied together!!
Well of COURSE the voltage is too high, I just plugged into a 240v 30 AMP OUTLET!!
So pulled off the connector that tied the two circuit breakers together, moved the neutral down to the grounding bar and retested, TADAH!, 115v @ 30 AMP and NOW I can see exactly how much amperage my one AC unit is pulling when the compressor starts up, 16 AMPs. Which explains why we kept blowing our 15 amp circuit breaker when we were plugged into the little 115v outlet.
Anywho, lesson learned (DETAILS!) and here's a picture of the finished installed. I did add a lock just for practice so no one will be tempted to take my surge suppressor.
I'm glad those folks over at EMS had me (or idiots like me) in mind when they designed this thing. Saved me from frying my rig!
