Wheel Bearing Grease

I have been repacking trailer bearings myself for some years without issue. I repacked my Crossroads 328sb bearings using Canadian Tire Wheel bearing grease, but on a long road-trip last summer, discovered that the grease was liquifying and running out of the bearings.

I've never had a problem with the Canadian Tire brand grease before - worked fine on smaller trailers, but it clearly didn't work for this trailer.

I'm repacking now for a long trip to Disney (6000km round trip) - any advice on what grease to use? It needs to be something I can get in Canada (NAPA, Canadian Tire, local stores...)

I see Canadian Tire sells LUCAS grease. I've had great luck with their X-TRA Heavy Duty Grease. It's works well in high temperatures and extreme pressures.

X2. Whatever you get needs to be high temp grease often sold as disk brake wheel bearing grease.

Hard to say. What do the specs say? What does the manufacturer recommend? Perhaps the bearings were adjusted too tightly? Just a few thoughts.

Thanks - specs said to use the grease I was using. Bearings not adjusted too tightly.

When repacking the bearings this time I would look for the bearing country of origin. I had a similar problem with a 5 ton equipment trailer. Unfortunately when inspecting the bearings they looked fine. However they would overheat and cause grease to run out the cap. I replaced them with quality made in the USA bearings and never had another problem. The quality bearings cost nearly double the price of the originals, but they continue to provide quality service with no unexpected downtime.

While all bearings are supposed to be made to the standard identified by the bearing ID number there are cases when some manufacturers let units that don't, or barely meet the standards into the market place.

Dig unto the Dexter website and you will find a section:https://www.dexteraxle.com/resources...s/hub-hub-drum

Then go to Hub & Hub-Drum then their instruction sheet which will then give you a grease spec. If you dig into that website, there will be some actual grease manufacturer's recommendations. I'm using a Mystick product though which we in the US can find at Tractor Supply.

You do need to follow that grease spec as, IMHO, the 'bearings used by Dexter are Unfortunately, pretty marginal in size for the weight then using marginal Chinese bearings makes it worse. I've switched to US made Timkens though all of them are not US these days but seem to be as good

Dexter doesn't make it as easy to find info since Lippert bought them and modified that site - but it's there and you just need to have patience.

Not all greases are compatible.
Mixing different types/brands of grease can cause either hardening or liquefaction.
Need to purge all old grease and stay with one brand/type of grease.

Had problems at work with grease and on my own stuff. Switched to Ford specification grease and no more problems. Grease gets hot here in Phoenix and some of the popular red grease would actually melt in the steering components and run out on the ground.
