I own a 2006 discovery and love it, all of my friends that look at it they all love it but they all ask me the same question, wouldn't you be better off renting one when you need it? I use my rv about five times for the year on family vacation and about another five times for when I go to the race track and I have to say I love every second that I spend in the rv, what is everyones oppinion about this? How much do you need to use it to justify owning something that expensive? Joe.

IMHO, when talking about a large coach it can only be justified on a subjective level. The financial numbers will never work for someone who isn't full timing. If you love every second you spend in it, it sounds like it's worth it to you.

If you get down to it, you can't "justify" owning a McMansion or a pricey car or a boat fancy jewelry or playing golf or going to a spa or even to DisneyWorld. The bottom line is that if you can afford it, that's justification enough, even if you never use it.

Sure, it might be less expensive if you rent something, but it's not yours, it may not be the layout you prefer, who knows who's used it and how, and then there's the hassle of loading everything in and back out if you rent.

There's a lot to be said for the convenience of having your very own home on wheels.

It's the life style for us. We put less then 5,000 miles a year on our coach. Because we don't use our coach much we buy used gas A's. We can afford it so we do it. More fun then motel/hotels and our dog likes it more. Plus you can't have a fire in a motel/hotel room.

The way I look at it if you rent one it is kind of the same as staying in a hotel. Who knows who slept in the bed last night or used the bathroom or kitchen.

Also even if you only use it a few times a year, it is yours to change or add stuff to. Any decorations or upgrade make it your own home. Even if it is mobile.

There is no such thing as a hobby or a 'toy' that can be financially justified. The only justification for either is to help maintain sanity, and who can put a price on that?

Well sir, IMHO, once you've been serenaded into a deep slumber by a thousand Tennessee crickets, topped a hill to find the RV's windshield filled by snow covered peaks and a valley so richly sewn in 'green' that you have to stop to wipe the tears out of your eyes or had to sit on a log overlooking a canyon so vast it takes HOURS to just comprehend the beauty and the sheer vastness of it all, then you will know FOR SURE whether or not it's worth it. Unless you are fulltime it is very difficult to quantify/justify the cost of owning, moving, staying in an RV versus staying in a typical Hampton inn or like place. But if staying at state park campgrounds, staying in your own bed, not living out of suitcases, and not always eating at restaurants has value then you can at least make a case for an RV.

I know what I did in a former (younger) life in hotel rooms, my wife has told me of her "findings" in hotel rooms and we both agree that having our own is worth just about any price.

It's worth it when it is no financial hardship, you don't mind taking care of it and it takes you to the places you want to go in a manner which you want to travel. If any of the above changed for me I would get rid of it.

On a financial stand point I think very few can really justify owning a depreciating money pit as are many other luxury items. I would imagine the same people ask how many MPG's you get. If it is worth it to you nothing else matters it's your money.
