None of the above on our upcoming Texas to upstate NY trip next month... DAY 1=750 miles, DAY 2=650 miles, DAY 3=400 miles. On day 1 we will probably leave at 4AM and drive till 6 or 7PM. 600 miles of that day will be just to get out of Texas. Murphy has promised to drive part of the way.

When I'm traveling I like to be able to enjoy the trip not just getting from point A to point B.

Since I am chicken to drive the rig, I arrange the days when possible not to drive more than 6 hours. It's not always possible but whenever we can.

We normally dont want to go over 350-400 a day either, but our exception is about every 5 to 7 years we make the 1800 mile treck to see the relatives and with only a two week vacation window we have to get there ASAP so we can spend time there before heading back.

Given the amount of time available for travel, we'll have to run about 450 miles per day on Friday and Saturday and 150 miles Sunday to get to the iRV2 National Rally in Sevierville, TN this July. I guess that's better than driving straight through from Central Ohio to West Texas (1458 miles) as we used to do every year on vacation when we lived "up north".

What do you mean w/o reservations? Why would anyone do that? LOL

I never go anywhere w/o reservations. I am too OCD for that. I have packing lists and checklists and maps and reservations and a backup plan and all the papers and another backup plan. And I still forgot the towels our first trip.

When I drove by myself to visit dh while he was in officer training for the army, it was a 2 day drive just me and the kids. Not only did I have our overnight ressies made, I had gone online and found what time we would pass through what townand where we would have breakfast, lunch and dinner. I then typed it up and emailed it to my mom, dh, and best friend.

OK, now the truth is out, I am blonde AND nuts!!

We made no reservations except on the ferry from Skagway to Haines. (They won't take you without a ressie.)

The only place it bit us in the rump was at Yosemite NP, they were full and had a waiting list about a mile long so we grabbed a CG outside the park and drove back in with the truck.

For us, reservations are too confining and usually result in us having to pass up something interesting along the way.

You didn't have 5PM as a choice, but that is when I like to stop. Get setup and be ready for dinner by 6-7PM.

The only reservations we make is for our destination park. We want to be sure they can take us for as long as we want to stay. Getting there is a relaxed drive, stopping to see what we want, and planning the trip in a way that we have time to do so. That's what we are able to do in retirement that we couldn't do when we were working.

Reservations? We don neeeed no stinkin reservations! Guess being full timers frees me up. DW sometimes asks if we need to make reservations but except for our winter home park in La Penita Mexico, I don't usually get reservations. But, I do stop by 2:30 - 3:00 PM and since I usually don't get started until 8"30 - 9:00 AM we don't get too far. I suppose someday we won't be able to find a space, and then I will HEAR about it, but until then, why bother.

I am one of those anal retentive planners. I usually set a schedule, make a plan and try to follow it.

when that doesn't work out, plan again (he who plans early, plans often).

example - this summers 7,000 km trip, 5 days for the first 1500(with 2 days off), 3 days for the next 1500, then a day off, then another 3 days for 1200, then a day off, 850 in 2 days, then another day off, then another 1500 in 4 days, then 3 days off, then 200 in a day, 2 days off, then the rest. give or take a day or two. so - totals 7,000 km in 24 days.

If we are looking for a place for overnight, I usually get the Trailer Life book out and stake out a campground ahead. Then I call on the cell and see if they have space. Going south we have a few favorites to stop at for overnights. They are in the right spots for us.
