When to Winterize the fresh water system?

My wife and I just purchased a new to us Class C. We hope to take a few shake down trips here in the next few weeks. We're in Phoenix Arizona and the temps don't usually get real cold. My question is, when is the temp cold enough and for what length of time, that I may want to consider winterizing? If it drops below 32 degrees for a few hours and then is 60 the next day do you think we'd be safe not winterizing?

Thanks for any input on this,

Craig

A few hours below freezing and warming back up to those temps will be fine. Just do not leave hose out and connected.

We have camped down to 16 degrees f. Filled FW tank and put the hose and filter away. I also have heated wet bays and tank heaters.

Generally, if you are just dipping below freezing fro a few hours(4 or so), it is not a problem.

With the conditions you describe you should not have a problem. We will be in your area January.

Freezes overnight even to the mid to low twenties that are followed by above freezing day time temps will not require any precautions with your water system.

48+ hours below 25 degrees with no warm ups start to become a different story. But even then if it's no longer than this, and especially if you're occupying the RV and running the heater you should be fine.

Remember your RV is a thermal mass that takes a fairly long while to reach below 30 degree and stay there.

Ice expands and it floats. So, a tank that's less than full may form ice floating on the surface but it will not easily freeze solid. And, it won't easily expand to the point of breaking things. The worry is pipes. They can freeze solid and they can burst due to trapped water expanding. So, that's where the concern is - not so much in your tanks.

PS. As previously mentioned put the hose away anytime the temps fall below 30 degrees even if it's just overnight. They will freeze and sometimes burst unless water is running freely through the hose the entire time.

Thank you all for the input. This is kind of what I was thinking but being new to the MH there might of been something I was missing. You don't know what you don't know.

In my opinion you have no need to winterize in Phoenix. It takes an extended time below freezing to do any damage. In the unlikely event it does get that cold in Phoenix, just turn on your furnace to its lowest settings until the cold snap passes. If you feel the need to winterize, drain your tanks and just use air to blow out the system. No need for the pink stuff unless you are headed north in mid winter.

Usually if we aren't going to use the RV for a little while we blow out the water lines with compressed air. If for nothing else it's piece of mind.

We bought an adapter for this. Several on Amazon;

If you do this be sure and turn the compressor regulator down to less than 50 PSI.

When overnight temps are below freezing and daytime temps are not much better you should consider winterizing.
