Basecamp does have a learning curve, but once you "get it" you will find it incredibly versatile.

I use Sygic and Google maps on a Ipad Mini. The map updates are more frequent than Garmin's and IMO the Ipad's screen is brighter and sharper than Garmin. What really made me switch from a Garmin GPS was Google Maps and Sygic both have routing options that I can avoid Interstate highways and follow the old US and State routes. I also have other map apps such as Backcountry which uses USGS Topographic maps.

My Garmin 660 has that option too, as well as re-routing on the fly.

Google maps has limited options to avoid some types of routes. However if you create a route in google maps and drag the route to adjust it, it will not keep that adjustment when you send it to your cell phone or tablet. There is a warning to that effect when you select "send to your phone".

There have been many complaints to Google to reinstate the drag feature transfer, but so far they have not brought it back.

If not mistaken I believe you can "share" a shaped route and it preserves the modified route.
I did a few of these a month ago to send to a friend and believe it worked well. As I recall it creates a link that us unique and opens that specific modified route for future use.

I'm not familiar with the share feature but if you try and send the shaped route created on your computer to your cell phone or tablet (so you can navigate with it) the shaped route (created by dragging the route on your PC) will not transfer.

i use my phone with Waze App. Mostly listening, seldom need to look at it. Always up to date and suggesting route changes if there is trouble ahead.

I use CoPilot on my 7" Samsung tablet. I also have DeLorme Street Atlas 2013 on my laptop, but they no longer make it. Good planning options, but their maps were usually out of date.

I can/do use both to preplan trips, which is a must for me. Each day I just bring up that days planned route and go.

CoPilot is free and I just paid a small fee for voice navigation. It is my prime GPS and it seldom, if ever, led me astray.

In my towed I use a Garmin Nuvi.

I gave up on GPS units. We've had several over the years. None of them even came close to the Waze app for accuracy. Or Google maps. Or a paper atlas. Just my opinion.

I just bought the Garmin 770 and it's nice however it sends me all over the place when it's in car mode...wants to take me way out of the way...doesn't make sense.

Howdy!

I’ve been using Co-Pilot gps app for years. I use it now on 12.9 iPad Pro in the TV and on my iPhone in the Smart Car.
