If you're eating up anodes (as everyone does) you need to periodically flush the tank. The anode combines with the water components and precipitates out an insoluble sludge. Flush it once and you'll be a believer.

Another reason is that if you never remove the anode, trying to get it out when you finally check it will be a good job for that 800 pound gorilla that installs Cummins oil drain plugs. Drain, flush, check the anode. open or closed, your choice, but I don't particularly like cleaning strainers in my faucets of dead bug bodies. Those tiny gnats and no-see-ums pass right through the wasp and spider screens.

I try to drain before we leave for home. we have a 12 gallon heater. draining it takes off about 100 pounds of weight while towing.

Suburban water heaters are glass lined just like home water heaters. Who drains their home tank when they leave for a week or two ? No one I know. Don't drain it unless you need to winterize it or if you will not be using your RV for 2 months or longer. I would also drain my fresh water tank in these situations.

Why does it extend the life? It's glass line and shouldn't be affected by water being stored in it.
