If you're eating up anodes (as everyone does) you need to periodically flush the tank. The anode combines with the water components and precipitates out an insoluble sludge. Flush it once and you'll be a believer.
Another reason is that if you never remove the anode, trying to get it out when you finally check it will be a good job for that 800 pound gorilla that installs Cummins oil drain plugs. Drain, flush, check the anode. open or closed, your choice, but I don't particularly like cleaning strainers in my faucets of dead bug bodies. Those tiny gnats and no-see-ums pass right through the wasp and spider screens.
