TRC said it was a very common occurance because as we drive over rough roads the screws that hold the wires down become loose and that causes heat and could cause a fire. The person I spoke with at TRC stated the connections should be checked at least once a year or more.
We were lucky that the breaker on the pedestal had tripped and the only damage was to the Transfer Switch. Had the breaker not tripped we would probably be dealing with an insurance adjuster.
Moral of the story is to make sure electrical connections are tight and like other posters have said, be vigilant.

Wouldn't a small dab of Loc-Tite on the bus screw help prevent this from happening? Just a thought.
