Why respond to threads you are not interested in?

First of all, I'm guilty of this myself. So I am not throwing stones

There is a thread out there currently asking what king of gas mileage people with F 53 gases class As are getting. Of a dozen or so responses, very few answers the question. Most were "who cares?" (Obviously the OP did which is why the question was asked), or "if you are worried about gas mileage you shouldn't own a motorhome" and similar responses.

I recently posted a thread about trying to compare the noise level in DPs to Gas Class As by the use of phone based sound level meter apps. With all the talk about gas vs diesel, I thought we had a bunch of actual measurements there would at least be some numbers to chew on. While I did get a couple of responses (thanks to those who played), mostly I got "this is a waste of time", "those measurements are meaningless", "I don't need some phone to tell me what RV to buy, and of course my favorite was a fellow who told me how many MPG he got on the road.

I guess my question is if you really think a post is stupid or a waste of your time to read, why read it? And if it's a waste of time to read, why take the time to respond?

Our Community Rules begin with this :

Be Courteous!
Please think before you post and keep your comments limited to the topic at hand; above all be nice. We encourage everyone to participate in and enjoy the Community while at the same time adhering to these rules:

We try to enforce this and all the other rules. Our members play a huge part in reporting any violations to them as we can't see everything that is posted.

Some of these comments are harmless and meant as fun , however others are mean spirited and have no place here. Please report these to us and they will be dealt with on a case by case basis.

Thanks for the post.

Cliff

It's the Internet, many people speak confidently about things they have no knowledge about or interest in.

Was this one of those posts?

I did see your original post reading sounds levels in RVs. I agree with you that many of the comments were not very supportive and unnecessary.

Anyway, when I take the next trip - Memorial Day weekend, I'll record the sound levels and we'll see what kind of responses are generated.

People are guilty of saying things while hidden behind a keyboard that they wouldn't dare say to someone's face or in a room full of people.

I'll try to remember to take some sound levels in a couple of weeks when we drive to the Big Easy.

To go along with what Cliff posted, we also have this rule:
Quote:
Please think before you post and keep your comments limited to the topic at hand;
and our Mission Statement
Quote:
Mission Statement: Supporting thoughtful exchange of knowledge, values and experience among RV enthusiasts.
Notice "think" & "thoughtful" are in both statements.....for a reason.

Although every member is encouraged & allowed to post in any thread/in any forum, it's just downright being disrespectful when posts are made that are sarcastic or not helpful.

Thank you, in advance, to those of you who DO genuinely make supportive & useful posts.

IMO the anonymity of an alias encourages people to say things they know are highly unlikely going to be followed back to them.

All and all I think the Admen does a fantastic job keeping things in order, but Raineman hit the nail on the head, there are some rude people out there, someone will ask a question and there will be more remarks about the grammar or the spelling than there will be about the question.

At least part of the answer to both the noise and the fuel economy questions are that they do not matter very much. Letting a useless survey sit with no one pointing that out gives the survey a false legitimacy.

In the case of the gas vs diesel noise measurement it would only be of any significant interest if there were comparable units available. There are not. Thus it is an apples vs oranges comparison.

If you want to get a survey of different models or manufacturers of the similar units it might be of interest. That said the noise levels are the least of my concerns around what unit to buy. Unlike a lot of other things it is relatively easy to improve.
