I too have found the same thing where I currently live awaiting to go fulltime.

I just purchased a new Apple 1.67 17" Powerbook which comes with builtin in WiFi. I also picked up the base station. Well, The kid in me came out and I opened the box for the Laptop first without setting up the base station. Within a few minutes of turning it on for the first time I was surfing the Net thanks to some unknown neighbor who has NO SECURITY on their system. I can see the PC they use on my Mac and I could go into it if I wanted to.

So, As said before, turn off all file sharing and use a firewall.

I have been watching this thread for a long time. I install wireless networks in my job, and have a WiFi card in my lap top. As stated already, if you are going to install wire less at home or anywhere. Set up the security. follow the book and keep your codes safe.
I have used our wiFi every where we can. it beets the slow dial-up. The folks offering the service give you access to the net. If you have e-mail, I have found a few places I can check it without signing up. I can't send but can receive.
