I'm scheduled for a bone scan in a couple of weeks to make sure my hip replacement has secured to the bone and plan to leave on a trip immediately afterward. Will I have any negative after-affects from this procedure? Didn't realize all the questions I should have asked the doctor at the last office visit.

None of the scans I've had done had any restrictions

Thanks Guys, I did some Googling and reading some of the information and i didn't see any bad after-effects either. But it always helps to have some first hand experience. I've had several x-rays and an open MRI but no experience with any kind of scans.

I didn't have problems with my scan at all.

However, some folks may have an allergic reaction to the tracer, but I understand most do not.

I was wondering if they ever do any kind of test to see if a person has any allergys to the tracer before hand? A lady i used to work with said her elderly mother spent 3 days in intensive care after a reaction to whatever they injected her with for an MRI scan.
I don't know that I'm allergic to anything but then I haven't been exposed to everything either.

Had the bone scan done, no problem with the scan procedure and the results indicated everything was fine. The surgeon was just wanting to make sure the bone was attaching to the metal stem of my hip replacement since I was still having some discomfort walking 18 months after surgery. He said it may just take a little more time and exercise.

GLad all was well, when I had a bone scan, I just laid on the table, never had anything injected, ............................
now the MRI.... yes made me so sick, the iodine they injected gave me a horrific reaction.

I would say it should not delay travel by more then 1-4 hours,, (Time spent in the waiting room and actually being scanned). It is a walk in walk out procedure, Some of my doctors do them as office visits. Happy trails.

A bone scan with a nuclear tracer will tag you on the radiation monitors worn by customs officials for days afterward if you are crossing borders. It may also occur as you pass through airport security. It happened to me crossing into Canada at the Detroit/Windsor border after a simple stress test. Usually a quick explanation to the official is adequate. But be prepared for a few strange questions from customs officials. If you worry about such things, get a note from your doctor or lab.

I had a Nuclear stress test done and two weeks later I went to Mexico to an engagement party. On the way back, at the border, I was pulled out of line and taken to a secluded area where they brought out the Geiger counters. It turns out that they can pick up the Nuclear stuff up to thirty days after the test were done. I was told to Make sure to have a letter from your Doctor if you are planning to travel !
