Woodward Ave car cruise from Detroit

Anybody have any suggestions for camping at the Woodward Ave car cruise in August 2015? Hubby has always wanted to see it. We would like info on where to stay.

We have been in the northern Detroit / Pontiac area several times, and there are not any commercial campgrounds in the area. One possibility is Wayne County Fairgrounds - Belleville Michigan which is pretty far west of town, but interstate and expressway routes to where you want to be.

You are going to have to go North, South or West of Metro Detroit to find a campground. Don't go East or you end up in Canada. West towards New Hudson is Haas Lake. Never been there, just heard about it. About 20 miles via e-way to the Cruise. North at the Holly State Rec area Groveland Oaks County Park has camping. About the same distance to Woodward. It might be a better choice because the Cruise goes North/South on Woodward and you would be due North of it.

I do not know if the old Michigan State Fairgrounds in Detroit has camping for this event.. But there are a few private parks i the area. None real close though. Algonac State Park and Thousand Trails St. Clair are two I know of.. TT parks are open to the public, but they only have a few 50 amp sites and their 30 amp sites..... Well,,

Read all the posts about why you need a proper Surge guard like a Progressive Industries HW-50C This is the type of place they are talking about. Nice management, not so nice 30 amps.

Never stayed at Algonac

These are a good hour from the event though.

Hass Lake is nice. There is also Camp Dearborn in Milford FHU sites, Proud Lake State Park , Highland Recreation Area and Brighton Rec. Area. We have stayed at all of these and they are all good CG's. For your purposes Camp Dearborn would be my choice. By the way it is called the Dream Cruise.

Pontiac Lake State Park is another choice. It is west off of M-59. I second Haas Lake, it is a nice campground with full hook ups. We will be staying the Memorial Weekend this year.

There are places outside of Detroit. I don't know what rig you have or if you have a car. You could go to Addison Oaks in Oakland County. You'd only be 20-30 minutes from the Woodward Cruise.

The Michigan State Fairgrounds is no more. It has been closed down some years ago.

Here is the official web site, The Woodward Dream Cruise
People start showing up almost a week ahead of time. Thursday and Friday before the Cruise there is a lot of action on Woodward. It's best to enter the Cruise from the North on Woodward driving South. The heart of all the action is at 13 Mile Rd. and Woodward in Rolay Oak.Traffic moves at a stop and go crawl the closer you get to the center of the Cruise. There is a lot to see and do on foot along the Cruise route, specially in the Birmingham and Royal Oak areas.
