Would like your opinion on Garage lighting

I will have a 40 foot open garage for my 30 foot class c and am considering what kind of lighting I need. I don't think I will hardly ever need lighting in there but my wife thinks differently.

My friend has two 4 foot led bulbs (in a 8 foot fixture) on each side. I am thinking 2 four foot led bulbs. I also need at least one towards the interior end to illuminate some storage closets but they will not be in the closet.

What do you like?

I would install enough lighting to make it a bright place to work. You can wire the lights in groups so that you don't have to turn them all on at once. If you have a bench, have REALLY good lighting over it so that you can tinker without being in shadow. LEDs have matured so that they are cost effective.

Depends on climate too LED and fluorescent can both be problematic in good weather

How does the old saying go? "You can never be too rich, too thin, or have too much light."

My coach sits outside, whereI get as much light as Sol provides (and worse, on his schedule).

My cars sit in a 24 x 29 garage with six eight-foot fluorescent lights in it. I've considered renting it out to the local day-surgery center.

Seriously, with my diminished eyesight I find I can't have too much light in my work areas. And modern lights won't drive up the electric bill.

To answer a prior poster's concern, the fixtures have high-output starters so they can fire in cold weather. Probably not a concern for you, in Florida.

Someday I may replace the fluorescents with LEDS.

My 2-car garage has 6 4-footers. No such thing as too much light.

Lots of light is a good thing! My 34 X 44 shop has 3 rows of 10 100 watt incandescent bulbs. 1 row down the center and a row down each side about 4 feet from the wall. With the bright white walls it works great, and heats me up in the winter too!! 1500 watts of artificial sunshine!!

I'd opt for as much light as you can get as already eluded to you can never have too much light

I forgot that my garage's eight-foot fixtures are dual-bulb, so there are twelve eight-foot bulbs in there.

The more the better! I suspect that strategic placement of coach and lights will let you get away with fewer fixtures (i.e., you probably don't need fixtures over the roof of the coach..) ... BUT still ... all the light you can get would never be a bad thing.

Costco, Home Depot have the 2 bulb LED fixtures. They put out quite a bit of light. The nice thing is, with some of them, you can daisy chain them together. So you can start with say 4 then hang more later if needed. No need to have outlets installed everywhere you want a light. I replaced the fluorescent fixtures in both the basement and shed. They not problematic like fluorescent lights in the cold weather, they pop right on to full brightness.

I have a 40' x 60' with 14' eaves. I closed off 20' for shop tool and wood working rooms. In the remaining 40' x 40' I mounted 8 fluorescent fixtures. That's 16 8' bulbs. They are good, but when I start running out of bulbs, I will replace them with LED's. I put them all on one circuit. Not really that concerned with the cost of running them and there aren't many times when I feel I've got too much light.

I found that 4 of the 100 watt HID fixtures light my 34 x 48 barn like an airport.
