Only if they check your oil and clean your windshield. Last time i was in Oregon i got yelled at, i didnt realize they still pump gas for a person. To be honest i was shocked. But NO its not required. Atleast that i know of. We have 1 station close to me , really its 35 miles away but my neighbor will drive there to get gas, but she is 91.

We don't pump our own gas here in NJ either. We don't tip the attendant unless they go out of their way with service.

NJ.banned self pumping gas in 1949
Oregon banned self pumping gas in 1951

Concerns over 'untrained' individuals handling Class 1 flammable liquid

Which is kinda funny.........I can NOT remember anything BUT Full Service gas stations until late 60's

(Self service actually started back in 1920's with a coin operated Gasamat stations in the Rockies.....1947 modern self serve muti-pump station with girls on roller skates zooming about collecting monies and resetting dispensers opened in Los Angeles, CA)

I have diesel so I pump my own fuel.....Class III combustible

I lived and worked in Oregon for many years. I still go there weekly. There are exceptions to the gas pumping law. Motorcycles, boats and gas cans. Also there are many unattended stations in the eastern side of the state.

I remember a Gasamat station on north Broadway in Boulder when I was student at CU in the late sixties. The pumps used tokens that could be purchased from a vending machine out front. I could fill my motorcycle tank with one token.

I thought Oregon changed the law last January 1st. At least there were enough jokes going regarding people setting themselves on fire at Oregon gas stations. Pretty sure that will leave New Jersey and last hold out.

There was a change that exempted some smaller stores in remote areas from providing attendants. It was not statewide.

Oregon counties with populations of less than 40,000 are exempt from the state law that is rarely enforced by the fire marshall. If the law is violated, the gas station pays up to a $500 fine, so please don't get upset if someone seems a little cross with you trying to pump your own gas.

Trucks pump their own here and you pump your own if you have a collector vehicle! Filled the work truck here for 37 years!

I wonder how the other 48 states have managed...

I usually don't tip them.
