You may not get a new drivers license in the states

My drivers license expired 2 days ago. ( forgot all about it) I went down to the DMV to renew it. They want a ton of paperwork to prove who I am because of the "real idenity" law.

They said I had to have all this paperwork and my SS card. I lost my SS card years ago so today I went to the SS office to get a new one. They said I couldn't because my drivers license was expired....

I asked what if I never had a drivers license and the gal said "ah but you did and now it's expired and it's in our computer. You will have to renew it to get a new SS card"

I told her I can't because I need a SS card to renew it and she said "sorry"... I can't help you...

So, you can't get your license without a SS card but you can't get a SS card unless you have a current license.

Guess I'll be driving without a license... or a SS card...

I suspect you were speaking with someone who didn't know the laws of their own state. The requirement to prove Social Security number can be legally met by providing copies of W-2 forms issued by employers or form 1099 provided by the SSA itself. It you look at the SSA website and try to find a link for getting a replacement card you will find that SSA discourages you from doing so since there are so many easy alternatives.

To meet the new licensing laws you simply need proof of identity and proof of your SSA number. The identity requirement can be met with a birth certificate or a passport.

I will try to cheer you up. I have a class A CDL, with all the endorsements. Oh, and air brakes are a restriction, not a endorsement....but I digress....

My drivers license number was entered into the computer. The nice person behind the counter said, Oh my, when was the last time you took a written test? My answer was, when ever the CDL's came out, then every 4 years for the haz-mat. Well, I guess the computer hated me. I had to take the following test to get my license renewed. A basic drivers test, like a high school kid would take. A basic CDL test. A Combo test. An air brake test. A double/triple test. A tanker test, and the Haz-mat test. Yep, 7 written test to get my license.

Now see, don't you feel better?

Some state offer the option for a "secure" and a standard drivers license.

If you can, obtain a copy of your birth certificate (I am one of those lucky folks, like our President, who CAN NOT get a true copy of my birth certificate, and for the same reason I might add,, Like him I can get an "Amended" one though)

Then apply for a passport.

Try using that for ID at the stupid DMV.

Oh, and call your congress critters.

Florida seems to be one of the "High Risk" states that requires extra stuff. I recently went there to change my license from another state. I won't even go into the details, but I'm sticking with my current one.

I guess "Catch 22" is still the flavor of the day for bureaucrats.

Forest Gump had it right.

Why doesn't your expired license "prove" who you are? It has a picture and all that stuff. Maybe you need to give them a bonus---like a copy of your birth certificate--that would make them feel warm all over.

I did this same thing a couple years ago because I thought I had my whole birth month not just to the birth date. After standing in line fora couple of light years, they told me I had the wrong form and needed two forms of ID. I ran home to get said ID and came back only to find the line was "closed" so they weren't taking any more people in.

I asked about the two IDs when they could see I had been here, drove here, was born here in the US but the law thing is mindlessly quoted. Oh, and the require IDs weren't even picture IDs so how does having the paperwork prove anything? Geez Louise...I live in bureaucrat central (metro DC) so I have loads of picture IDs but no paperwork was the requirement--my expired license proved nothing.

It was so much fun..................... :/

Something from the Canadian Pointy of View ...... This rant was supposedly written to our Cabinet Minister in Charge of Reissuing expired passports.

Dear Mr. Minister,
I'm in the process of renewing my passport, and still cannot believe this. How is it that Radio Shack has my address and telephone number and knows that I bought a t.v. cable from them back in 1997, and yet, the Federal Government is still asking me where I was born and on what date.

For Christ sakes, do you guys do this by hand?

My birth date you have on my social insurance card, and it is on all the income tax forms I've filed for the past 30 years. It is on my health insurance card, my driver's license, on the last eight gd passports I've had, on all those stupid customs declaration forms I've had to fill out before being allowed off the planes over the last 30 years, and all those insufferable census forms that are done at election times.

Would somebody please take note, once and for all, that my mother's name is
Maryanne, my father's name is Robert and I'd be absolutely astounded if that ever changed between now and when I die!!!!!!

I apologize, Mr. Minister. I'm really pissed off this morning. Between you an' me, I've had enough of this bull! You send the application to my house, then you ask me for my blasted address. What is going on? You have a gang of Neanderthals anals workin' there!
Look at my damn picture. Do I look like Bin Laden? I don't want to dig up Yasser Arafat, for crap sakes. I just want to go and park my butt on a sandy beach somewhere. And would someone please tell me, why would you give a damn whether I plan on visiting a farm in the next 15 days? If I ever got the urge to do something weird to a chicken or a goat, believe you me, I'd sure as hell not want to tell anyone!

Well, I have to go now, 'cause I have to go to the other end of the city and get another freakin' copy of my birth certificate, to the tune of $60 !!!

Would it be so complicated to have all the services in the same spot to assist in the issuance of a new passport the same day?? Nooooo, that'd be too damn easy and maybe make sense. You'd rather have us running all over the frreakin' place like chickens with our heads cut off, then find some anal to confirm that it's really me on the goddamn picture - you know, the one where we're not allowed to smile?!
(freakin' morons) Hey, you know why we can't smile? We're totally pissed off!
Signed - An Irate freaking Canadian Citizen.

P.S. Remember what I said above about the picture and getting someone to confirm that it's me? Well, my family has been in this country since 1776 when one of my fore fathers took up arms against the Americans. I have served in the military for something over 30 years and have had security clearances up the ying-yang.

I was aide de camp to the lieutenant governor of our province for ten years and I have been doing volunteer work for the RCMP for about five years.
However, I have to get someone 'important' to verify who I am - you know, someone like my doctor WHO WAS BORN AND RAISED IN COMMUNIST freaking CHINA!!!

Mine expired. All I had to do was go to the DMV, complete an application to renew, present my expired liscense and get my picture taken again. I took my passport but didn't need it. Easy in Texas.

Getting one in CO is kind of the pain you described. I guess somewhere between the time I was me in California and moved here I may not have been me anymore.

Renewal was a breeze however, I booked some airline tickets at AAA and the agent mentioned my license was expired, went down a few days later and all the girl said when I asked about the grace period she said that if you let it go a year you have to take the written test again.
