Arrow 2011 iRV2 National Rally

2011 iRV2.com National Rally
September 25 to October 1, 2011
Bethpage RV and Camp Resort
Urbanna, Virginia

I am pleased to announce that the 11th consecutive iRV2 National Rally will be held at Virginia’s premier campground and resort in historic Urbanna, Virginia. Nestled on the shores of the Rappahannock River, “The Rivah”, Bethpage Camp and RV Resort has welcomed generations of guests over the many years the camp has been open to the public. The resort has been described as the best campground in Virginia and one of the premier destinations on the entire east coast of the US. Entering the facility one can immediately see that this place is different. Continuing on the main entry road and past the gatehouse, a greeting message is seen in front of you on a masonry structure framed by a beautiful flower garden which visually bids you a warm welcome to Bethpage.

We have camped at Bethpage a number of times however since we were there last, they have built a number of features that we have not yet seen. Some of the new amenities that are featured at Bethpage include a new water park and kiddie pool and a “rivah” front boardwalk. The many other features of this facility are too numerous to include here. The recreational hall is amazing and it will be the focus where we will have all of our meals, entertainment and group activities. The dining facilities are second to none. A cafeteria style serving line will expedite serving of meals by the smiling faces of our caterer. Beverages will be made available during all of the catered meals.

It is planned that most members will arrive on Sunday or earlier. When you arrive you will be met by "Parkers" who will escort you to your site and help you get situated. The registration desk will be open from 4:00pm until 6:00pm in the recreation center on Sunday. I expect that you will be receiving a goody bag and tickets for your trip and or activities including a themed 2011 National Rally ID Button.

The Rally will “Officially” begin afterward with our “Welcoming Social” in the recreation hall at 6:00pm. The social will have both hot and cold Hors D'oeuvre including soda, beer and wine. This event will run for about 2 hours from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. I expect to see your smiling face at this event and please remember to please wear your National Rally ID all the times and especially for the meals.

Our National Rally will see a number of vendors in attendance. They will be setup in a separate building and will welcome members beginning Monday and daily thereafter from 9:00am to 4:00pm in the afternoon. They may chose to close on Wednesday since this day will be a tour day for the group. Some of our vendors will present seminars and I can guarantee that you will see this time as well spent and enjoyable. The seminars will most likely be for 1 hour unless requested by the vendor and I hope to fill 6 slots on Monday and 3 more slots on Tuesday morning. The Rally Program (working) will detail all the events, meals and times and will be subject to change. I hope to have a tentative program up on-line as soon as possible so we can see how this event will unfold.

It is expected that we will have a major Virginia based RV Dealer present and it was suggested that they would bring a number of recreational vehicles for display and sale. I will confirm this later but I believe that it will happen.

Monday morning will feature our first meal, a full sit down breakfast. Breakfast will begin at 7:30am and conclude at approximately 9:00am. Coffee and water will be available all day during our seminar days. Our seminars will begin at 9:00am sharp after breakfast. The morning seminar session will conclude 12:00pm. There will be a 1 hour lunch. The afternoon session will resume at 1:00pm and it should run to 4:00pm. Monday night will be dinner on your own. During the early evenings we will try to arrange group campfires or other activities. Please send me your suggestions if you have something special you want to put together. I remember we used to play games around the campfire and those were a lot of fun. The recreation center has a fully functional stage with lighting and audio.

Tuesday will conclude our seminar sessions. (if booked) Before the Tuesday schedule begins, “Coffee with the Mayor”, Don Morgan, (Petro) will be served at 7:30am until 9:00am. Please be sure to attend this unique event for coffee and Mrs Morgan’s cookies. Yes you can bring your own cup, disposable cups will be available. We will have cream and sweeteners on the table. This event will be duplicated on Thursday and Friday.

The seminar schedule will begin at 9:00am and will run to 12:00pm. Lunch will be on your own. Tuesday afternoon will feature indoor activities at the recreation center to include games and other activities. Invite your friends to play cards or board games. We have put a "Potluck Dinner" on the schedule that will begin at 6:00pm. Please start bringing your stuff in at about 5:00pm to 5:30pm. It won’t take too long to setup. The dinner will run until about 8:00pm. There will be electrical plugs for food in crock pots that must be kept hot. Door prizes may be awarded at any time and you must be present to win.

In regard to potluck meals, breakfast & dinner; you might be asking what you should cook and how much to bring. When I have a final listing of the people that will attend this event, I will take the list and separate the names into 3 groups. It will go like this (alphabetically); 1-2&3, then 4-5&6, etc. all the way out to the end of the list. In this small example, 1 & 4 will bring the same, 2 & 5 will bring the same and finally 3 & 6 will bring the same stuff. The 1st group will be asked to bring an entrée. The 2nd group will be asked to bring a veggie or salad of some type. The 3rd group will be asked to bring a desert. This randomizes the list so that no single group gets stuck with bringing entrées. For example, what I am trying to prevent is that all attending from A to I bring entrées. The last time I used this plan, I did not receive any complaints and over 120 people participated. Who gets to bring what will be made known to you 30 days before the rally in case you want to pre-plan your meal. Once you get here and register, that information will be duplicated and provided to you in the Rally Program. When preparing food for a potluck meal, only make enough food to feed 8 people including your party. We’ll figure out the groups for potluck breakfast later on.

On Wednesday we will be departing via 55 passenger coach for Colonial Williamsburg. (*) We are getting tickets at a group rate. Your motorcoach will be leaving at 8:30am and returning at 4:30pm to Bethpage. This is the only optional event in the schedule and you are not obliged to pay for or attend this event.

We will need to confirm our bus reservations NLT September 1st. (*)The tour does depend on whether or not we can sell out the 55 seats on the bus. If we do not sell out, those folks that registered and paid on-line will be refunded their money.

The bus driver(s) know exactly where we need to go and we are scheduled to arrive at Colonial Williamsburg by 9:15 depending on traffic. We will be in the park for approximately 6 hours. Before entering you will each be given a ticket and you will be on your way; no need to stand in line. There are many things to do and see and I thought it would be best if you did these on your own rather than following a tour guide. Lunch can be at any number of restaurants. I have a menu for Shield’s Tavern which I will publish later.

We will be loading the bus I expect no later than 3:30PM. Arriving, tips for the bus driver are optional and may be rendered on exiting the bus at the campground. Returning to Bethpage, dinner will be on your own. If you have a neighbor that might not be going, ask them to check on your pet. I’m hoping that we can get together after dinner for a campfire and sit around and talk the night away.

Thursday is a “Family Day” or a day on your own however “Coffee with the Mayor”, will begin at 7:30 and conclude at 9:00am in the recreation hall. I invite you to go and explore Virginia and take your time. Most everything that you would want to see is within 1 hour driving time from the campground. There are a number of Internet resources that will help you make these decisions and plans. The camp office also has a well stocked brochure rack. Depending on what you would like to do, the staff may suggest one or two of the many dozens of attractions that you may want to go and visit. A day on your own has always been the number #1 requested thing to do while you are participating in a week long event. I thought this would be a welcome break from our group activities. Please also make time today to go and visit our vendors. Now you’re not off the hook just yet, keep reading ….

Don’t be late for our fully catered, sit down dinner on Thursday evening! Our "National Rally Dinner" is at 6:00pm in the recreation center and it will run until 7:30pm. I will have a complete meal plan published in the Rally Program so that you can see exactly what will be served. This dinner is going to be served “Family Style” and all your food will be placed on the table. A pre-set salad will be waiting for you as you seat yourself. Desert will conclude the meal and beverages will be available.

Beginning at 7:30pm, we are pleased to have Big-Bam-Boom and the Little Big Band “Trio” play a 90 minute set for us. Boom performed at the 10th Anniversary Potluck Dinner (solo), in Myrtle Beach and he was so well received there that I thought, why not ask him to play for us at the National? During that set it was noted that he kept on playing like the Energizer Bunny, song after song and we had to ask him to finish up. We did so very much enjoy the performance. Jan Vaughn “Boom” comes from the immediate area and he said that he grew up nearby. For Jan this will be like ol’ home week. Get up and dance or clap your hands, you are not going to want to miss seeing Big Bam Boom and the Little Big Band. Door prizes may be awarded at any time and you must be present to win.

Friday will be one of the busiest days of the rally. Our day will begin at 7:30am featuring “Coffee with the Mayor” and that will roll into our potluck breakfast beginning at about 8:00am. After breakfast 9:00am (no rush) we’re going to have our National Rally Meeting. Hopefully we will be able to make an announcement as to where the 2012 National Rally will be held and who is going to be the Rally Master. We have scheduled 4 activities for the day. Our day will include a round of mini-golf, hay ride, ice cream cone with 2 scoops and a 60 minute ride on the Bethpager which will motor down the “Rivah” to the port of Urbanna and back. You will be issued tickets for the boat ride, ice cream and mini-golf. The boat will seat up to 44 people and I expect that it will go out 3 times beginning in the morning. I don’t have the boat ride schedule completely figured out yet but I expect that we will be able to do 3 trips if at all possible beginning in the morning. The boat may have to fuel up and whatever else they do to the boat to turn it around for another trip so that takes time. The day’s activities will conclude at or about 5:00pm. Dinner will be on your own.

After dinner, weather permitting, I hope that we can have our grand finale campfire and we can sit around and enjoy one another’s company.

On Saturday morning I would have wanted to schedule some type of activity however I think that a lot of people just want to get on the road early and start making their way home or to their next destination. I am excited about the 2011 National Rally and I hope that you will choose to attend this event.

We have reserved 100 campsites for the rally (more are available) and the caterer will have plenty of food and staff to make this a great event. The sites that you will occupy while at the rally are very large and will feature full hookups. (see the Virtual Tour) The campground has free WiFi and now cable TV. The laundry facilities are first rate, the camp store is well stocked and all the other support services that you may need will be there. Golf Carts are available for rent. There is also a wash rack if you want to wash your motorhome, car or truck. See the listing in features and amenities on the Bethpage website.

Bethpage also has a “Virtual Tour” resource available so you can explore all the features of the campground right on your computer screen. If you want to come to the National Rally and if you can’t come in an RV, “You’re still invited!” Take a look at what they call, “Vacation Rentals.” You can organize a fly, drive and stay with us at the National Rally. I bet this will be something that will come in handy for some folks. When you call to book a vacation rental please let the person know that you are with the iRV2.com Rally Group.

In order to attend this Rally, all you need to do is call Bethpage, (804) 758-4349and tell them that you are with the iRV2.com Group and you would like to make a reservation. They will know the dates and they will make the campsite assignments. The deposit is $38.80 for 1 night camping (Sunday) to reserve your site. You will be asked to pay the balance on arrival. (5 additional nights) In regard to the Colonial Williamsburg tour and the meal plan we will get that resource up shortly and you can pay for that on-line. The meal plan will include all catered meals, entertainment and the Friday activities. I am dedicated to keep the cost for this event under $400.00 per rig (2 persons) for the camping, meal plan (includes taxes & gratuity) and Friday activities. There will be an XtraPerson option when you go on-line to pay for your event. The Colonial Williamsburg trip is priced seperately.

One question that always comes up is where’s the grocery store? A full sized Food Lion grocery store is approximately ~2 to 3 miles from the campground in Saluda on Route 17. A Walmart is located 20 miles either to the South or the North, take your pick.

Please get involved with this event by volunteering to work on a committee. Many jobs need doing and positions are available!

Please make an entry in the
iRV2 Event Calendar.

This place is in our back yard, and I can't believe I've never heard of it! We are there for sure! Looks like a great place, but me thinks they could use some help with their marketing, and that web site is pretty bad.

We will be signing up as soon as I can verify that I am able to get vacation time that week!

How is it one careless match can start a forest fire but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

How 'bout a "brunch" coffee hour? That's more my speed. Morning comes WAY too early.
