About to go full-time!

We are 70 and 74 years old, we just accepted an offer on the house, and assuming all goes well with closing, we will purchase a truck and fifth wheel. Are we excited? Yes! Nervous? Well, yes, but we're mostly excited. Looking forward to learning from all your experiences.

Not to sound bias but make sure you know how much work you are adopting with a trailer set up vs. a motorhome. Physical condition and willingness to work is the division bell. Happy Trails!!

Helen,

Welcome to the Forum! This is a great place to learn anything RV. If you are paying cash for the truck and rig then you should be good, otherwise sometimes you can not get financing without an address. Please check into it prior to selling if you plan to finance.

Start reading threads about all sorts of things. Emptying your tanks, driving your rig, electrical 12Volt v/s 120.

YouTube has a lot of great videos you can watch. Of course you can come here any time. There is a thread called "RV Fixes for Newbies and Oldies" that you can read. Go to the search engine at the top right of this page. Enter that name and start reading.

I agree that you may want to check into a motorhome instead of a 5th wheel and truck. Just check them out.

Good luck and enjoy the next step in your lives. Lynne

Thanks much! Here's our logic in choosing a fifth wheel over a motor home. When we can no longer travel, we will need to live in the stationary trailer, as we won't be able to afford another house, and it doesn't seem like a good idea to permanently park a motorized vehicle. We also would like to avoid maintaining and insuring two motorized vehicles. I really appreciate your helpful thoughts and welcome any more comments you may have.

Thank you for your comments! We are paying cash for the trailer and the truck. See my reply to Funding Fun for our reasons for choosing a fifth wheel. I welcome any additional thoughts from you!

That defines it!! Go with a higher end unit (Open Range or the like) and make sure it's got all the optional insulation packages, etc. These manufacturers also claim they are suitable for "heavy use", while the will not use the term "full time". Bigger is always better and if you have a two bath or a bath and a half option...good option.
