Best approaches & CGs in Custer St Park

Hi, new RVer here.... retired and planning as much time on the road as I can. Planning a trip to Custer State Park, SD.... would be interested in comments on road approaches into the area... Our Cougar is 12+ ft tall and I don't want to make it into a convertible.

We are coming in from the eastern US, eventually headed to Yellowstone... but I've heard that Custer SP is something special. Anybody familiar with it & opinions about which CG's are better than others? Or which roads are better?

We plan to stay at least a week (yahoo!) in basecamp there....

Thanks for your ideas....

Paul

Hi Paul and welcome to the forum!

We love that area and drive a 40DP so I don't remember there being any real trouble with access roads.

We've stayed at several private CGs in the area but next time want to try to stay in the park itself. One of their CGs inside the park is noteworthy because buffalo roam among the RV sites and you just may have to adjust your plan for the day based on their schedule. We drove by it and made a note to check it out next trip. I'm sure if you check out campgroundreviews.com you'll find the comments about this in the reviews there.

The Black Hills remains just about our favorite spot among the 34 states we've stayed in.

Best of luck and safe travels.

Rick

We stay at the park 4 or 5 times a year. Stay at the game lodge campground. 18 dollars a night. If you like wildlife you will love it. A trout stream runs through the back of the campground. Just google Custer state park game lodge campground and you will find all the info you need. If you are there on Aug 3rd we might run into you.

We will be there later in the year and plan on staying at the Rafter J Bar Ranch in Hill City.
