Buying a used 5th wheel

Hello everyone, I'm kinda new to the RV world. I currently have a Class C Gulf Stream, but we're wanting to buy a used 5th wheel and do some traveling. I've read a little on different brands, but I'd like to hear some honest feedback from folks who have owned different brands. We're leaning towards the Keystone Cougar. I would appreciate any and all guidance . I also would appreciate any recommendations you might have. Thank you all in advance.

Cougars seem to be popular. As with any used RV condition is paramount. Dont get too set on a single brand, instead find a floor plan you like and can live with without too many comprimises.

Cougar is a popular model, so should be plenty to look at. I like the advice of staying flexible on brands as at that price point you have many options that are similar. Columbus, Big Country and others. You will find similar quality from all of them, and each carry the same risk of problems.

Find a floorplan you like. Then make a list of “must have” features. Take your time here. For instance, our last list (every time it’s a little different) we wanted: auto hydraulic leveling, 2 ACs, bed in slide for bigger closet, black tank flush, road side kitchen, no dinette, and many other things we came up with from prior rigs.

Next, learn to really look at used fivers. There’s a ton of stuff to check, but a few biggies are: physically feel the slide floors-pressing hard looking for soft spots. First outside and then inside-even if you have to move some furniture. Bring a flashlight-look carefully under the bed and under cabinets for any dark stains or swelling of wood. Check the underbelly for sagging from old tank leaks. Pop the stinky cap to see if the valves are holding. Get on the roof and see if the caulk looks like it has been maintained-should see signs of multiple applications. Make sure all tires match-if they have some miles on them and were purchased together it’s a good sign she is rolling straight and true.

That’s just a bit of what we do when looking. We always showed up fully prepared to find a reason NOT to buy and would be pleasantly surprised when we found a good unit. Good luck on the search and I hope all goes well!

Agreed find a floor plan that works for you then research the brand. There are brands that are far better than others. When you look at the tire make sure you look at them all the way around not just in one area the tires can look new on one side and wore out on the other. Check to see how old the batteries are! How the blinds are and if they go up and down and aren’t broke. We just bought a 2010 Montana and the quality of it is far better than some of the newer ones made today.

For me it's FLS and solar connections all hooked up and waiting for panels/batteries. Floorplan first though. I LOVE the front living space so I don't watch TV in the kitchen lol/

I also wanted to thank redhooker. I am in the very beginning stages of looking and at my age, I need it to be right. The advice is sound and thank you for pointing out what to check.

Can I bring you along to check out 5vers?

Try all the appliances,, stove, microwave, sinks , toilet, a/c's , slides, tv/radio, fireplace, furnace, propane tanks, awnings, windows, central vac, inside/outside lighting. Do you want the original bed. Clear title, Most important,,,take your time inspecting.

Forgot a washer & dryer. I don't even know if they make FLS 5th wheels with washer & dryer combos.

I would enhance your decision by hiring an RV inspector to go over the trailer stem to stern, report any findings to you and selling dealer. If private party, you can also negotiate the selling price based on any repairs needed that are reasonable.

Then you have protected yourself as good as can be.

Have fun looking and deciding! I would steer you to ORV fifth wheels, but they are very rare on the used market. Well built and good customer service.

Try and stay within 3 years old used trailers.
