Getting Back Into It Again...

Hi everyone,

Looks like we may be getting back into the RV lifestyle after a 14-year hiatus. We previously owned a 30' Holiday Rambler Alumascape TT and enjoyed it while we had it. We're now empty nesters and ready for the next chapter of our lives. I've been lurking absorbing lots of great information on this forum (the best on the web IMHO). I apologize in advance for asking questions which have been thoroughly discussed previously. I'll try to search first, then ask only my unanswered questions. Right now I'm thoroughly enjoying the threads discussing the pros and cons of the Super C's. That is where I'm currently focused. We have a BMW motorcycle that we would likely tow in an enclosed trailer along with a car.

Alas as a noon I can only help with the most basic pros and con's

Pro you're camping and don't even have to go outside to visit the commode during a rainy day
Pro you have the essentials and some luxuries
Pro goes on most roads to most places you want to visit

Negative, gets under 90mpg, I think it'll use less fuel then a double decker going 65 in head winds though
Negative front windshield is smaller then a prevost
Negative not enough room for a pinball table, billiards table, card table, shuffleboard table, ping pong table, foosball, air hockey table AND your 8000 bottle cellar.

Welcome PackersFan, from a Wisconsin tax refugee.

When you're ready to start visiting dealers, run on over to Wausau and visit the nice folks at King's Campers. We had nothing but good experiences there and you'll find almost universally good reviews on them. We had mixed experiences with Burlington RV, but they have a large inventory.

If you're looking for an escape from the Wisconsin winter, come on down to Florida for a vacation and there are a number of very large RV dealers here. We had two good experiences with Lazy Days in Seffner (Tampa) spread over 15 years.

I'd also highly recommend Tom Johnson's Camping center in North Carolina (with outlets in Marion, just east of Asheville, and Concord, literally one block from the Charlotte Motor Speedway. They are great people). Probably not convenient for you to visit but worth a call once you've narrowed down your wish list. We bought our "retirement rig" from them while still living in Wisconsin.

Thank you for your wonderful advice. I've actually stopped by King's Campers once or twice and am really impressed with them. As a small business owner myself, I am in awe with the reputation they have been able to develop over the decades. Truly impressive!

As for the F/A-18 Hornet, unfortunately that was not my previous ride. I've enjoyed aviation since a young child and was fortunate enough to own a couple of airplanes along the way. It's in my blood - I still look up in the air every time I hear an airplane. As you can imagine, living 25 miles north of Oshkosh is a real treat come summertime! That picture was taken at an airshow I attended somewhere along the way. The pilot was just starting to tickle the sound barrier.

Droid changed a few of my spelling choices, about a month. I'm probably going to go a with a used super c on a Kodiak my secondary choice. I like the spacious feeling of a class a, plus the family pretty much wants that big windshield. They're willing to forgo a sticks and brick upgrade for a camper. I wish the Kodiak wasn't discontinued. Before the serious research we loved the Gulfstream super nova in the grand hotel plan, along with recommended air suspension upgrade. Now we also like the jayco senaca. Waiting for more f series floor plans, very limited now. Luke the serviceability but you lose some house per ft length. The pricing of the heavy duties puts me in a tag axle. I want to keep to something like a tiffin phaeton 36 GH at the most and am willing to wait a couple years more to obtain. Have a few hobbies that are still incomplete and kid friendly (basement model railroad empire). The modelling is entertaining for everyone. Good luck with your search. Enjoy the trails.

It's been years since I was active in the EAA and aviation, but I suspect we crossed paths at one fly-in or another, including Oshkosh (where I volunteered for years at Pioneer Airport).

Here are the two aircraft I owned at different times. The first is a rare '41 Taylorcraft, the second is a '46 Luscombe.

Beautiful aircraft! I'm sure our paths crossed somewhere. You were a "real" pilot because you flew taildraggers!

All my photos of my prior planes are archived on other computers, but I found this picture of my last aircraft. It was a 2004 Cessna 182 with the Garmin G-1000 glass cockpit. It was a pleasure to fly and was a breeze to get my instrument rating in.

Nice looking "tin can".

I belonged to the Capitol City club, out of Truax, for access to "travelling" aircraft. At the time the club had a 152, Piper Archer and a Piper 180. The 152 got traded for a 172 RG before I sold my shares in the club. The most sophisticated nav instrument was a Loran. We did use the Archer for a trip to Florida one time, but I never did get my instrument rating. Decided it would be too expensive to keep up even once I got it.
