Going from a class A to a 5th wheel

I have had three class A's over the years, and have enjoyed them, but now I am moving to a 5th wheel. After many months of researching my wife and I have decided on the Redwood 38GK. We love the floor plan. The fit, finish, and workmanship look great. We pick it up next week. We plan to do a very detailed pre-inspection to include turning everything on before we take it home, but we are trilled and ready to bring it home.

Best luck with the new RV, new Truck, new Harley...etc.

Where will the bike ride? The 38GK is not a toy hauler is it?

You are correct, it is not a toy hauler. So, here is my story. 6 months ago when I started looking at 5th wheels my plan was to haul the motorcycle behind the 5th wheel. Then I found out for most states there is a 65 foot limit. Popped my bubble. So I tried to find a 5th wheel that had a floor plan we liked that was shorter. That didn't work out. So recluctantly i started looking at toy haulers. The only one that was "OK", was the Tesla, and i had worked out a good deal with a dealership, but at the last minute I couldn't do it. I had to make a decision and based on our camping needs we would be camping more without the motorcycle then with it, so back to a 5th wheel. My wife loved the RW 38GK, so that is what we are getting, but don't think I am not going working on a plan to take my bike. For now I may rent a bike when we get to our location, but working out a plan to take mine is my priority. I am looking at different types of trailers, but many people I have talked to have told me that as long as you are not grossly over the limit most cops don't want to waste their time pulling youover and measuring your rig. Now, yes, that may be playing russian roulette and I may just be the guy they stop, or if I happen to be in an accident then it may be an issue. I would rather be in the limits, but if I am a foot or two over, I may play the odds.

Sounds like a good application for a"Tote" type deck for the back of the 5th Wheel. It's not a trailer, so you can use it behind a towed RV:

Home - Toy Tote
or
Idaho Tote
or
http://www.cruiserlift.com/swivelwheel.html
or
http://www.campingworld.com/shopping...t-system/39163
and there are others...

Best luck

Just curious...why the switch to a 5th wheel? We have a class c and are debating keeping it, going to a 5th wheel, or going to a class a. Every time we think we've decided, we question our decision. We are currently leaning toward the 5th wheel. All advice welcome!!!

There are several reasons we selected a 5th wheel:
1. My wife was nervous in the class A's; wind and trucks made it unenjoyable for her. All together we have put about 150 miles on the new 5th wheel since picking it up. It was fairly windy on the way home and we hardly noticed it. My wife is very pleased with the ride of the truck and 5th wheel so far, and so am I.
2. Financially I believe it is a better buy; no engine or drive tran to worry about. With the 5th wheel, I just winterize it and forget about it. With the class A's I would want to run/drive it at least two times a month during the winter to circulate the fluids. Overall I believe it will cost much less to maintain a 5th wheel over a motorized RV.
3. Bang for the buck, I believe you can get a very nice, spacious 5th wheel for much less than a comparable motorized RV.

These are the main reasons we decided on a 5th wheel, but the bottom line for anyone considering purchasing and RV should be how it will fit their RVing needs.

Thanks so much for your insights! We agree with you completely on the economics of a 5th wheel. It's why we will probably be 5th wheel owners in the next year.
