and no RV. Sitting here turkey hunting in a blind. This site has very interesting topics.
It does concern me to read the myriad of mechanical and technical issues that other rv'ers have encountered. And I'm not a good fixer upper-- usually cause a bigger problem when I try to fix things.
Being a minimalist, I wanted to start out with a pop up. Wife not so interested. "Have fun," she said.
Recently my 4 year old grandson has really gotten into watching some of the rare RV shows on TV with me which has now piqued by wife's interest by being able to get the grandkids ( we have 2) involved.
We have been a few places and the Class C seems to be a possible start. Sales lady did a good job on the wife regarding the Jayco's especially the Greyhawk. Surprised me( kept asking wife behind sales lady's back if she won the lottery ?) as we were both schoolteachers in Florida now retired.
Anyways next year she reminded me that We save $500 in healthcare monthly when I go on Medicare, plus a pension will begin as well, so maybe it's doable. Until then, doing my homework, learn what I can, get settled on the unit we'd like, and then start checking pricing for new vs used.
Any recommendations for what to do, where to go at this stage of our process would be appreciated. Still no turkeys yet.

Suggest you rent one. The only place that comes to mind in Orlando is El Monte RV, but there are probably others. Rent a class A and a Class C. Get an idea what you like and what you don't. Then come back here and we can discuss what you can fit in your budget. New vs used etc.

By the way, a pop up is a great way to start. You can tow them with anything, the beds are very large and comfortable. Usually not much in the bathroom department in the smaller ones. And, they do come with AC!

We've had 2 pop ups and they are the best bang for your $

Second best was a hybrid travel trailer. They are like regular travel trailers except they have drop down tent sides with beds like a pop up. We had a 23 foot hybrid that opened up and gave the living space of almost a 30 foot travel trailer.

Glad to have you here with us. I would not be too concerned about the mechanical issues you read about in here. You'll never see a post where someone says "Hey my transmission worked fine on our trip". There are tens of thousands that have very little issues with their RVs. An RV is a bit like a house and there's issues that arise, but if you keep it simple your repairs will most likely be simple.

BTW camping with grand kids is a pure joy. Good luck and Happy Trails!!

Welcome aboard...I was going to relay the same thing that TonyDi did....nobody complains about not having a problem......Do your research. Thats what we did and ended up with exactly what we wanted.

If you own an RV you need to be handy with tools and a voltmeter or a checkbook. These things are living on earthquakes as they travel down the road. The more complex the rv the more things to go wrong. Mostly small things but there is always something minor to fix or maintain. It is a hobby.
A pop up is a great start an I recommend getting an air conditioner on one. Of course you can't run that off battery and need a decent generator if boondocking but a pop up is simple and will allow you to get to places you do not want to run a noisy generator.,

Hi Larry, renting is a great way to enjoy getting into RVing and it gives you a chance to explore the type of unit would work for you. Good luck and be sure to keep us updated on your final choice.
