Finally made the plunge and sold the sticks and bricks and bought a 2004 Winnabego Adventurer and moved the DW and the pooch into it. We aren't going to be the typical F/T due to me still being active duty and stuck here for about the next 3 yrs but we will still be taking short trips back and forth to the Midwest and waiting anxiously for that day that we can hit the road.

Welcome to the group from former VA residents. Not military, but I went to work for a contractor at NASA Langley after getting laid off from Boeing after the SST debacle. We lived in Hampton for almost three years.

Came back to the Northwest when Boeing re-hired me and I eventually retired early in 1998. We now live in one of the nicest places ever, Anacortes. My sister, who lives in our home town in England says that Anacortes is where God comes on his vacation! People here don't understand why we even have an RV. They all have boats (not my bag!) which can only do 12 mph in many cases. One friend has a 38' cabin cruiser that burns 14 gallons/hour at 14 knots (1.0 mpg), and he thinks RV's are gas hogs!

Our rig's 8 mpg looks pretty good by comparison, and we can go to New Mexico, Zion, Grand Canyon, etc. in our "gas hog". Try doing that in a 38' boat!

Welcome to Virginia from a couple of Northern Virginians. The 3 years will go by fast. For short trips - check out the First Landing State Park. We like to stay there off season (spring and fall). Also Westmoreland SP and BethPage (North on Rt 17) would be nice short trips for you. The Virginia Blue Ridge Mts have lots to offer as well.
