Greetings from Wisconsin
I tried to post this a few days ago,but we've been having some just resolved connectivity problems. I've successfully made a couple other posts and thought it time we 'formally' introduce ourselves.
Peggy and I hail from the Madison WI area, at least during the workweek. If I don't have to go to work the next day I'm likely at our 'cabin', in central Wisconsin, or in the RV. The RV gets used, typically, one weekend a month during our all too short season, plus usually 4 weeks of vacation time, spread over the year. As I type this, in fact, we're parked in our ownership site in upstate South Carolina. As poor as the weather has been, so far, I'm still not looking forward to returning to another Wisconsin winter another week from now. We're both in the Insurance industry. Peggy does system support work for the Life Insurance subsidiary of American Family Insurance, and I work for the auto claims department of State Farm Insurance. We've both been at our respective companies for over 30 years.
Our RV story reads like that of many of you, I suspect. Back in about 1980 we decided we were tired of rolling up a wet tent, perhaps we could afford a used pop-up? We found we could not, at least not one that wasn't already ready for the scrap heap. But way in the back of the lot, out of sight, was a well used 15' Shasta, in need of some TLC. We struck a deal on that and I spent the next weeks cleaning, redoing some upholstery and drapes and replacing some missing or badly damaged wood work. It was such a treat to hav a dry place to retire to on those rainy outings (I had few weekends off back then, and it always seemed to be the wet one), and to have our own 'room' when we visited relatives in New England that year. A year later we bit the bullet and purchased a brand new 18' Shasta, with a potty on board! We thought we'd reached the pinicle. That year we learned not to try and pack too much into one trip. In two weeks we made stops at the Grand Canyon, Brice, Zion, Arches, Mesa Verde, and many other 'lesser' venues, all starting from and returning to our Wisconsin home. These days we're likely to drive no more than 5 hours on any given day and will try and split two weeks between no more than two campground set ups.
From there we kept moving up in size and complexity until we ended up in a 38' 5th wheel. That's what we owned when we bought the cabin. We sold it thinking we'd be using the cabin year around, and our out of state trips we'd just do the motel thing. That got old after a couple years. We now enjoy a 34' Allegro Open Road and we had an RV pad, complete with 50 amp power put in at the cabin. We also keep a boat near the cabin and a 10 year old Camaro convertible, that I bought new, and Peggy keeps trying to get me to sell, seeing as it only has 16,000 miles on it.
We look forward to following the adventures of others on this forum, as well as being able to take advantage of the brain trust when we have issues. Hopefully we'll be able to contribute now and then as well.
For now, other tasks are calling. This is only the second day in the last week we've not had rain (although we've still not seen the sun) and we have things we want to do.
