Hello from Calgary, Alberta Canada

A very green Newbie who has just purchased an older 1989 Winnebago. I plan on driving Winnie from Calgary to Yuma this February. I may be crazy but one way or the other it will be an adventure. I'm hoping to read a lot on this forum and hopefully learn some do's and don'ts. thank you for having such a great site

Welcome to the forum and the world of RVing.

Through we live on the west coast now, my wife (born in Calgary) and I got married there and spent many years there raising our family.

If the timing works out for you, you might consider departing a wee bit earlier and attending the Quartzsite Sports, Vacation & RV Show, Jan 16th thru 24th, 2016. It is a free show with lots of vendors to help you equip your new home on wheels and you can camp for a very modest fee or free on the BLM lands south of town.

Being new to RVs you might also find it helpful to research groups that will be congregating in the area and boondock with them. We stay with a Newmar group but iRV2 had a group there last year and there may be a Winnebago group camped out there as well. Camping with a group has a huge advantage for newbies in allowing you the opportunity to mix and learn from RV veterans.

Welcome to the forum. There will be lots to learn, but you've come to the best place for learning!

DW and I are newbies as well. We live just outside of San Diego, California. I agree with the post that you might want to divert to Quartzsite for a short while. We are going to camp with other Newmar owners to enhance our knowledge of our rig. There most likely will be a Winnebago group there as well. Don't forget about the iRV2 group too.

We traveled through Canada last during August and September. We had a very enjoyable week staying at the campground (Bow River) in Cochrane. Calgary, and the surrounding area is very nice! After leaving Cochrane, we camped at Banff, then moved on to Lake Louise. We also drove the Ice Fields Parkway from Lake Louise to Jasper. That is one of the most spectacular stretches of roadway that I've every driven. You truly live in a wonderland.

Enjoy your new coach, and travel safely.
