Hello from New Zealand

Hello to all you keen RVers in America. My wife and I are now retired and planning to take a trip to the USA, buy an RV, tour your beautiful country for 6 months (maximum legal limit) and then ship the RV to Europe to continue touring there (we both hold European Passports).
Itís very confusing trying to decipher all the legal requirements concerning the purchasing and registration of vehicles, especially as they change from State to State. We would be grateful if we could get some help to sort out all the possible pitfalls.

Can't really help with your questions , being Canadian and all. Several new members from Europe have indicated plans to do the same traveling as you. I'll round up their names and then you can try and contact them.

New RV or used? Financing or not?

There are some US RV's that are similar to those in Europe...so what kind of RV are you thinking of?

From experience, many banks do not easily allow a Customs release or export authorization for a vehice with a lein.

Now, if you have cash and know what you want in an RV...ask away for opinions on individual models and laws regarding sale of RVs in different states. Lots of expertise in the forum membership.

Here is a quick start guide from RVForum:

Best of luck

First order of business we would need to know where you think you might make your purchase so those with the needed information could respond.

Second if you would please post this Question in the General forum where more members would see it and offer answers and opinions, bear in mind some of which might be spot on while others may not reach that level.

Welcome. I can't answer your questions but a few years ago someone from OZ did something similar. Take a look at the Arctic Fox forum, afnash.com, and ask there. They are helpful folks.

If you see an Arctic Fox or Nash in OZ ask the owner since their plan was to ship it to OZ when done in US.

I hope your plans work out. We're ex-pat Brits living in NW Washington (about 90 miles north of Seattle and 50 miles south of the Canadian border). If there's anything we can help you with, feel free to send a private message.

We own our MH through a Montana LLC and that is working OK with no hassles with insurance or even taking it to Mexico.

One problem you will find is the conflict between supersize USA and downsize Europe as far as RV selection goes. In the US any MH worthy of its name is 30 foot minimum whereas here in Europe that would be the absolute practical maximum if you intend to get off the freeways. Most towns in Europe have 3.5 tonne (ton) limits through the middle and in many streets and heavy vehicles have to use the bypasses. Country roads and the older towns are pain enough with a 23 footer and would be absolutely impossible in our Airstream. One guzzles cheap fuel at $4 a gallon while the other sips $6 a gallon fuel.

Have fun - we do.

Another member, touring from Europe , is , " vale46fan " he had posted in the " Class A Motorhome Discussions "; " Which Type of RV"
Looks like a lot of the questions he had were similar to yours.
For quick access , go to the " Class A Motorhome " forum , click search this forum, in the blue bar above the first post, and type in " Which Type of RV " the search will take you right to it.
