Hello from Southeast Kentucky

Hello from Southeast Kentucky. The wife and I have been "travelers" since we met over 39 years ago.

Now, after over 36 years of marriage, our son is out on his own (two wonderful grand children, Emma and Eli).

In our travels, we have been all over the lower 48 by car and van. We have also been to Alaska 7 times since 1986 via the Alaskan Highway. We made all of those trips (86, 93, 96, 97, 99, 01 and 03) in the same ole '83 VW Vanagon (non-camper). Yep, we pitched a tent and hit the motels. We enjoyed every trip and met a lot of very friendly RVers along the way on each visit.

So, in late '07 we purchased a "used" '92 model 34 foot Allegro Bay Diesel Pusher. We had been "window" shopping for quite some time. So, we settled on the Allegro Bay. I guess like all used RVs, it had its share of things needing attention. We've been addressing them slowly.

Unfortunately, this entire year, we've been tied down assisting family members with serious health issues.

Hopefully, in 2010, we can head back north to Alaska.

So, I'll be searching the forums to find info about my RV and good road trips to take!

Andy and Dee

Andy & Dee,
Welcome! I sure do like the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Wish I could spend more time there. One of these days I also hope to make the Alaska trip. If you have any questions about your Bay you might want to check out the folks at A Part of the TiffinRVNetwork • Index page. Pretty knowledgeable group their for Tiffin specific products.

Jim & BJ, thanks for the link to info on my Bay.

For a 17 year old, it does have a few issues. Fortunately, all the major things work just fine. The two gas heaters, the two AC units with strip heat, the fridge, the gen, and light systems all work fine. We've worked on some of the interior cosmetics, etc. The engine and trans seems to be okay with 68k miles on it. We've done a few road test runs and it handles quiet well.

I need to address tires, although the tread is good to excellent, the age of the tires concerns me.

Yes, to the other posters, we love Alaska and the journey up thru Canada.

On our first trip, in 1986, there was a tremendous amount of construction and re-construction going on. That was an adventure in of itself. By the second trip in '93, the major re-construction on the Alaska Highway was winding down, although work was going on during the last trip in '03.

When we went back in '93, the thinking was that it might be our last trip. So, we took a month and done numerous side-road adventures. We went to Yellowknife (north shore of the Great Slave Lake). In the Yukon, we drove the entire length of the Dempster Highway (all gravel, 475 miles one-way). In Alaska, we pretty much done the same... drove lots of side roads and enjoyed the local cultural and attractions. But, we did not do the haul road north to Prudhoe Bay area.

Okay, thanks for the nice comments and encouragement.

Andy,
Check the build date on the tires. If they're too old it's better to change them in the shop than on the side of the road. If one blows the only thing the "good tread" is good for is to beat your fender well to pieces. Enjoy your coach.
