Hi from Aussie Mike
A newbie to iRV2 from Australia - looking forward to great ideas and solutions from well experienced US RV'ers. We run an Australian built version of a Winnebago, 35' A class on a Spartan chassis with the rear Cummins 6B turbo and Allison 4 spd. auto.
A little about RV's in AUST - we have basically same types as you guys but far less large manufacturers. I/we consider your used RV's to be very cheap compared to here and get a bit envious at times of the fancy rigs over there for the small $'s involved.
BUT as we drive on the left side, anything that does get imported here has to be converted to RH drive and we have tougher LPG and rear overhang rules than you. Only allowed an overhang of the lesser of 3.7m (12 feet) or 60% of the distance t'ween centre of front axle and centre of rear axle (or centre of rear twin axles) + due our 1988 Design rules (similar to California's) trying to import anything that does not meet those rules generally won't be allowed.
The CMCA is our largest RV club with over 66,000 members and is the largest RV club in the southern hemisphere - it has both national/state and local rallies - the nationals can get over 1000 rv's turn up.
I believe we tend to travel far further than those in the US. In winter our southern states RV's tend to travel to far north Queensland for the sun - that's about 3800 miles return.
We have our Hwy 1 which at over 9000 miles is the longest national hwy in the world - its every Aust RV'ers dream to do the Hwy 1 round Aust trip. Our longest straight sealed road section is 146 k's which is about 90 miles.
We also have huge road trains in the 'outback' which can mean eg. a Kenworth with 4 trailer fuel tankers or maybe 7 regular freight trailers - these are very big rigs to try and get past and they don't travel slow. The last Guinness World record I know of was 112 trailers towed here 100m (330 feet) using a Mack!
Anyway - if you are interested you can check them out by Google'ing 'Road Trains' - plenty of images there - check out 'Australia' too - its a great place to come visit.
Cheers Mike

My daughter lives in Byron Bay, NSW and we've visited and traveled to a number of areas in your great country. I always find Aussies to be friendly and helpful, I love the, "No worries." response to most things. I don't see many Class A's in your country, mostly C's and vans or B's. Having driven quite a bit in New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria, I would love to RV in your country. Happy Travels!!
