Hi having just found this forum and having a look through, you all seem a friendly group of folk so thought i would join.
My name is Maggie and i live in England at present i have a 5th wheel unit which was built in the states nearly 10years ago for the european market so it is only 7'6" wide with no slideouts. There is a slowly growing number of U.K. owners of 5thwheelers over here but tech info is still a little thin on the ground, and prices for bits can be very high.
We use our unit not only in the u.k. but also to tour europe (france, spain, portugal, italy etc)and i tow with a european pickup as the unit we have is a low profile, lightweight one comming in at under 2ton.
Hope to post again shortly

Hi Maggie,

Glad to have you visit our site. We have talked about renting a small caravan and spending some time in Europe some day...

Post some photos of your rig when you get a chance.

Ken

chatterdog ... welcome. The cross sea knowledge is indeed interesting.
I have participated in a London based boating forum for a long time and will eventually go over there and buy some of those chaps a beer when we meet up for the first time. The different, and often similar, perspective is fascinating.
Enjoy your stay.

welcome. we hope you continue to visit and share your experiences.

I have visited the UK three times, only wish it were for camping. spent my time in the Reditch area but visited London, Birmingham and the Roman Bath Houses (forget the town).

Thanks again for the welcome
K-Star I think it would of been the city of Bath as that is the most famous roman baths location and not too far from Reddich.
Fatdog I hope you dont have too many beers to buy for guys over here when you get here at present pump beer is 2.80p a pint with specialist beers being a lot dearer. The exchange rate here is $1.40 = 1.00 at the moment.
TXiceman you would probably have to hire a small motorhome (usually around 6 metres in length) as hire cars do not have towbars on. Most hire caravans are what we call statics which can be rented but are not designed to be moved. Fuel at the moment in my area is 0.98p a litre for derv = 4.20p for a gallon. Petrol is a little better at 0.94p which = 3.95 a gallon. I will let you do the maths re. cost in dollars.
Thanks for the compliment on my avatar MonacoMama.
We were going to change it this year for a new 5th Wheel but the model we have picked another one made to u.k. spec but with a slide out has gone up in price from 18,999.00 to 25,999.00 since December, so we are waiting awhile due to the current economy situation.I would be interested in knowing the price in dollars for a 5th wheel unit (small one around 26-27foot in length) The unit we have picked as our next one is called a Kountry Lite RK.7'6" wide with 12'x3'lounge slide.
Thankyou RV Wizard Im sure i will eventually have loads of questions to post and you will get fed up of that 'silly' english woman

Chatterdog,

Let us add our welcome to the forum also. We have great friends who own a caravan park in Kent. They do very nicely with it and are here in Florida for a month visiting their other home.

Interesting . . . the only Kountry Lite I can find was only a single year model - 1985. Maybe it's either non-US-made, or an export-only model.

New or used? Decent new 26' fifth wheel units are around $15K, and up. I don't know what would make them UK-spec, though.

Its an export model 7'6" wide with the electrics/sockets/invertor changed for use with our 240v rather than 110v
This is the link to the site that sells them over here in scotland
www.calderleisure.co.uk
I have just tried the link to check it works and have found that they have dropped the price a bit again, looks like were right to hang on a while.
There are only 2 importers of european spec 5th wheels in the u.k.The other is where our current van (in my avatar) came from 10 years ago
www.niche-marketing.net

I had a google to try and find Kountylite and couldn't
so asume its something that is made for the european/Australian market, maybe if you take a look at the unit you might recognise it and know who the american company is that is doing them.

as an aside the time is 09.10am over here as i type this

Hello Chatterdog and welcome.

My wife and I have spent a couple of vacations in the UK, traveling from London to all four corners of it, and enjoyed every minute. My wife lived there for a summer in her teenage years.

I recall seeing a few motor homes when there and in other parts of Europe, happy to hear that it is a growing market.
