Hi, Lynne and Meade are from Cheyenne, WY. He is retiring from Orthopedic Surgery in May and shortly thereafter we head out for our 1st motor home trip to Alaska. We have been RVing for years, but now travel in a 2008 Winne Adventurer 35L with our Maltepoo "Max" who is the chief of motor home security. Our toad is a brown Honda CRV. Our Alaska trip is planned for 3.5 months. http://www.irv2.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

Hi. We are headed out on June 3rd from Portland, Oregon. We have been there once before and want to take it slow and easy going up and back so that we can see more than just Alaska. We plan on returning September 15th. We will be driving our Itasca Suncruiser 38J and towing a Suzuki Grand Vitara.

Hi, Lynne and Meade. I just joined myself, and wanted to comment that my wife and I have made the trip from Florida to Alaska twice. Once in 2006 and again in 2009. The best advice I can give you is take it slow and easy, there is just to much to see along the way. We left in early May and didn't arrive til late May early June. Left AK in late August. Plan on spending at least a week in Denali NP and stay in Teklanika CG if you can, a much better experience. Hope you have a great trip, we sure did, and I would go back but we're going to Newfoundland, Etc this summer.

Welcome to the site. We lived in AK 73-78. We loved it and have been back many times. Enjoy the trip.

Hi, we are heading for Alaska at the end olf May from NC and gioing through Calgagary, Banf and Lake Louise on our way North. We have an 04 Adventurer towing a Green Honda Civic on a dolly.
I have a question to anyone who has been there or not. Are you taking bicycles and is there any bicycling in Alaska or is it all mountains? My wife has a problem pedaling uphill hence the question. I would assume that Denali national Park has trails but don't know for sure.
Hope to see you all along the way.

Sure, bring the bikes. We have the largets mountains in North America, but Alaska is plenty big, we have a lot of flat ground too. Lots of small towns like Valdez, a bike is a great way to look around. The town is pretty flat, but surrounded by beautiful mountains. Nice paved bike paths there.

Denali NP does not have any dedicated bike trails, the interior of the park it's just the road, but a lot of bikers use it. There are some trails around the entrance to the park, but I think they are restricted to hikers. You can take your bikes on some of the camper buses in the interior, IF, there is room, if not you have to wait for another bus. Check with the camping reservations center for more info. We've spent a good deal of time riding the buses, you can get on and off just about anywhere in the park and walk for awhile then get on another bus. Just make sure you know the schedule, if you miss the last bus, it's a LONG walk back to your RV. Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper all have good roads for biking, not real sure about dedicated bike trails. Good luck and have a safe trip.

Hello from Florida, Lynne and Meade!
Leaving Orlando early May for a few weeks in Montana, then off to Alaska early June. Recently retired so this is my first really long trip! Hope to meet some RVers along the way. Presidio pulling a red Nissan truck, with bicycles.
By the way- a neighbor of mine is from Alaska, said to consider taking a 4 wheeler on the trip. Anyone take and use a 4 wheeler in Alaska? Kind of wondering if it would be worth the trouble? See ya along the way!

IMHO, taking a 4 wheeler, would be advantagous, just remember, this is really wild country and if you plan on going to far off road, make sure you have good maps and a good GPS. Also, remember, your cell phone will not work, in most remote locations, so if you do get in trouble, you are on your own.......
Safe Travels
