Hiyas

Not just newbie to site, but to motorhome too. Wondered how I would feel about having one and now w/space to keep it, took delivery of... (!) a project. With guarded excitement went through '73 Chieftan and found it solid and well appointed... eh, except roof/ceiling. Is just me, and don't expect it to be new again, but need to address roof/ceiling first. Where does one start? Hoping AC clears door so can spend long as it needs in pole bldg. and out of fickle MN weather.

Welcome to the site!.You may want to post this in the vintage forum and you may get some response. What is wrong with the ceiling/roof that needs repair? Is it leaking, sagging, rotting, more info will help answer a few questions. Again, welcome and good luck on your new-to you MH.

Thank you Jim. You honed right in... leaking, sagging, rotting. My guess is began with excessive weight on luggage rack, but time takes its toll too. Am somewhat challenged in this digital age, but will heed your sage advice. Again, my thanks.

I think the best place to start would be to remove anything on the roof that would give you access to inspect the type of construction. If it has roof air conditioner or covers and frames for ceiling fans you could remove one and exam the cross section of materials.

More than likely a rubber or aluminum outside skin followed by a layer of plywood, followed by a framework, either metal or wood (more than likely wood based on vintage), which will have insulation, followed by an interior sheeting and finally an interior decorative surface (different types based on vintage). When you see what you are faced with, you can decide how to proceed with either complete replacement or spot repairs.

If spot repairs will suffice, you can then just clean, re-caulk and re-seal everything that passes through the roof and possibly replace the top surface and interior decorative surface. You can do an Internet search for material to finish the roof both exterior and interior.

Here is a link for a brochure on your 1973 Chieftan!

Good Luck!

Welcome peacnic. It looks like you have a big job ahead of you. Most of the older rvs had a relativly flat roof. Maybe you can change the whole thing and addl a slope to it so it drains better. Post often and don't be afraid to ask plenty of questions.
