I need advice~

I am 55, husband 55, two little girls and we want to try RVing. We grew up at the shore in NJ. We owned our own home but sold it in time before Sandy hit. Owning a summer home was a LOT of work but we loved the beach. Now that we are older we want to enjoy the beach without the hassle of owning a home. I can't afford to rent a house for the whole summer so I started wondering about buying an RV and taking it to Island beach state Park during the week and getting our beach fix that way. I would also like to go up and down to the many other beaches we never have tried. So my question is does anyone take their rv onto the beach. What other beaches can you do this on. Also my other problem is our suv can only tow 3400 lbs and my husband thinks what we can tow which is 18' is going to feel to cramped with two little girls and ourselves. To get something bigger would mean trading in our suv for something bigger. We are going to rent and try the 18' but I also think it will turn him off to rving. any suggestions besides a divorce! lol

Welcome to the forum. Good idea on trying rentals first. It will give you an idea of what works and what does not.

You are joining a good group of folks here with good info to share.

Enjoy the adventure!

When our three girls were growing up we went camping a lot with a very small trailer. The girls always slept in a tent and usually brought friends along.

They preferred the tent as they could laugh and giggle all night long if they wanted to and that suited us just fine.

How old are your girls?

First off - -

I hate to throw cold water on your plans, but I really believe you would very quickly find that four people and all their "stuff" will make that 18 feet feel more like 8 feet. Throw in a few days of summer rainstorms (or worse yet, the dreaded "H" word!) and that divorce becomes more of a possibility.

We recently traded a 26' motorhome for a 30' model because the two of us, seniors with two little dogs, were just too crowded in it even for relatively short stays - extended weekends and an occasional week long stay.

Camping on a beach is possible where it's allowed, but keep in mind that in most cases you will not have water or electric hookups, and the water tank and battery will not last long between having four people and hot weather.

Again, I hate being the bearer of bad news, but I sincerely believe your plans, as you've outlined, would prove unworkable.

You are right 18' is not very big. A bit tight if indeed you have to kids. A little bit of (financial) sacrifice would be of the essence, in my opinion. But you said you had a sommer home. Think of the savings you have from being rid of the summer home you can apply towards your new RV. 1st off no property taxes. Property taxes on your vacation home are usually not "Homestead" exempt. There may be some other savings that escape me at this time. But I think you're on the right track. There are nice Camp grounds (CG) that are on the beach. Just make sure you always wash the undercarriage of your vehicle and RV after being exposed to that amount of salt. I know it's not much but for now that's all I got. Hope it helps a lil.
