greetings RV'ers:
Retired in '99. Bought first RV in '02; Prowler 25J. Looking to ujpgrade to 5w since the purchase of '05 Dodge 2500 w Cummins Diesel.
Wondering if it is better to buy local or save money by picking up a rig in the midwest from RV Direct? Any experiences out there?
Thanks, Barbless

barbless, Welcome to irv2.com glad to have you. We had some friends order from an outlet and had many problems with their unit upon picking it up, some we serious enough to have them repaired prior to purchase. We looked for quite some time prior to our new unit purchase in June. With the economy the way it is right now, you will probably do just as good with a local delear and have selling dealer service to back any problems. Many dealers can service your purchase from an outside source, however; they are a bit reluctant and in many cases slow on non sold units, just my 2CW. Again Welcome to irv2.com we're so glad to have you. Keep us informed of your decisions and travels.

Delivery charges are rather spendy, somewhere around $1.25/mile. That is one reason Americana RV sells with pickup at the Indiana factory, reduce pricing. If you don't mind two cross-country trips, the return could be your "shake-down trip" to discover any factory defects, flaws, and just plain mistakes. This means you don't have the option of dealer prep, which is cleanup of factory debris, etc. If you wish to eliminate dealer prep, you should be experienced in what to look for and how things should operate.
I'm assuming you have already determined the maximum GVW 5er your truck will safely tow. Never use the dry or published weight, it's virtually useless, unless you plan to tow an empty trailer.

Barbless,

I see you are from WA State. You might consider checking with Russ Dean RV in the Tri-Cities. I have found in past dealings with them that you can generally get 25-30% off list very easily with them. They carry Keystone & Komfort products & possibly more.

Good luck.

Good luck and welcome to iRV2.

Take special note of weights in your search for a 5th wheel. Take care that the weights of the trailer do not cause you to exceed the weight ratings on your truck. A 5th wheel trailer can very quickly exceed the ratings of a 3/4 ton (2500) truck, especially the GVWR.
