New here, looking to buy soon...

Hi All,

My wife and I are starting our search for a truck/trailer combo. Our plan is to have it ready to go in 1-2 years, and go full time traveling the country.

We started out looking for a 5th wheel, but it would need to be a Toy Hauler since we have 2 scooters we're taking with us. After seeing my friend's 5th rig and the truck needed to pull it, we changed our focus.

We then looked at a few Class C motorhomes figuring we could tow the scooters and my car. We ruled that out mainly due to cost, and the fact that they aren't all that roomy inside.

We then found a TT that has a great floor plan, and fits our budget. We think we're going to get a Coachmen Catalina 333RETS.

Now, we're starting to look at trucks. I think we're going to go with a used Chevy Silverado 2500 HD, with the 6.0L gas engine. I'd love the diesel, but that looks like it'll be out of our price range.

Any advice offered about anything related is more than welcome.

Thanks!

Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

Hope you find the perfect RV for your needs! Just be sure the truck you buy is rated to pull the camper you select!

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

I believe it would help if you gave your price range.

Thanks! If I ran the numbers correctly, the 2500HD should be able to handle this trailer.

I used this web site: Towing Calculator based on Truck's Payload/CCC - Towing Planner

The truck has a payload of 3181lbs, gross weight of 9500lbs, and max tow of 13000lbs. The trailer has a max weight of 10500lbs, hitch weight of 1050lbs. Given our weight, and that of the dog and scooters, the web site says we're adding 1490lbs to the truck, giving 1691lbs of payload capacity. It says we can tow a max loaded camper weight of 11273-16910lbs...

Does that look right?

Thanks.

We're trying to keep it around $55-60K total. The trailer is going for $27K new here (Atlanta), and I'm finding Silverado 2500HDs around $30K.

This is the first time buying anything like this, so obviously trying to make sure of things before I buy.

Thanks.
