1996 Country Coach Affinity with AC Issue

We are new to RV'ing and decided to purchase a 1996 40ft. Diesel pusher. This forum was recommended as a valuable resource and I am in total agreement.

Obviously, a unit this old is going to have a few issues. Zones 1&2 Air Conditioners don't work.

Any pointers on RV repairs as well as great destinations are greatly appreciated.

Hi Nebraska!

Welcome to the Forum! You came to the right place. Look for a thread called "Vintage Rv's" and I think you will find that to be a great resource for your 1996. Lot's of knowledgeable guys there.

Best of luck from someone who was born in Nebraska! Lynne

With ACs I find it a good idea to attack the problem in stages. First question is whether anything works on them. Will the fans come on when set to fan? If not, the problem could be as simple as the thermostat or a breaker problem.

It is suspicious that neither work, suggesting an electrical or thermostat problem.

Coach that old, they should be cleaned and all connections up there checked and tightened. I used a pressure washer on mine. The coils were pretty dirty.

While I was at it I added some insulation to the evaporator box to improve efficiency.

Thank you for the response. Nothing happens when set to "fan." I have a lot to fix on this. Zone 3 seems to work fine. I will begin by giving them a good cleaning. Thanks!!!!

I assume you checked the breakers in the bedroom. If the ACs are original units, they may need to be replaced. We replaced all three ACs twice in the 15 years we had our '95 Affinity. If you just bought it, if you have a chance, take it to either the old Country Coach factory (now owned by Winnibago) ot Oregon Motor Coach in Junction City, OR. Nothing like getting a thorough inspection by the guys who have built or worked on your coach.

Welcome Nebraska Bob - You say zones 1&2 ACs don't work. Can I assume there is a zone 3 and it works?

You can call the Country Coach /Winnebago factory in Junction City Oregon and ask their advice at no charge. I also think the main Winnebago factory in Forest City IA will work on Country Coaches.

I have no idea what your budget is like, but when I bought our Affinity almost 9 years ago I replaced the air conditioning (heat pumps) units in zones 1&2 because they had seen a lot of use and I thought new ones would work better. They did and do. That said my original AC in zone 3 works fine and just makes a little more noise than the newer ones.

Did yours come with one slide or is it without slides? The late 90's Magnas and Affinities are great coaches. Some of the best ever made. Fix it up and travel in grand style.
