New Member saying hello

Hi everyone,

We are new to RVing. We are picking up our 2013 Coachmen Apex Ultra-Lite model 288BHS travel trailer this coming Thursday, 9/10. I am super excited yet nervous at the same time. I have never pulled a travel trailer before. This one is just over 31 ft long. I am embarrassed to say that I never camped before either. My wife grew up with a pop-up camper so she has some experience with camping. I am hoping the family togetherness of camping will bond our family even closer.

Going to go camping with trailer once before the end of the season (I live in Illinois).

Hoping to make some friends on this site and learn as much as I can.

Any pointers you might have are appreciated.

Thank you.
Chris

Hi Chris. We all started as you are excited for the new adventure and a bit of trepidation as what may happen. When I got my first trailer I practiced driving and backing in a large empty lot for hours. I even placed trashcans in the lot and tried backing between them just to get a feel for what you have to do.

We use two way radios and my wife is my spotter when we back up. She has gotten pretty darn good at getting me into some impossible locations. Get the kids involved in some part of the experience and make sure everyone is visible to you before you back up.

Good luck and keep in touch. Let us know how it goes!

Hi Chris,

What Bigd9 said x2. You are going to love this and camping is one of the best ways o connect with not only your family but the great people at the CGs.

Don't be afraid to ask for help at a CG if you are struggling. Just go up to someone who has a rig similar to yours and say, "Hi, I'm Chris and new to this, got any pointers please.". You will be surprised how people will help. We all have to learn and experience is a great teacher.

I have seen people talking about camping in your own driveway or backyard. It allows you to get used to how things work on your TT and to be able to access tools if you need them. If you set it up right at home, you can have access to your cable or dish too. You have water and with an adapter you can buy when you pick up your rig you can plug the TT in at home to electrical and enjoy it there.

Make sure to get it properly winterized so you don't end up with damage to your pipes or drains or water heater. Most of all, enjoy your rig and family. It is going to be a great time.
