Hello all
I am new to this forum - we just "graduated" from our trailer - a trailmanor 3124ks to our first class A - a 1992 Safari 34 ft w/diesel 190hp cummins allison 6 speed transmission. Unfortunately, we probably won't be able to take it on our planned journey to South Dakota from our home in Naples, Fl. due to its many issues! As I become educated to our new project, I will be asking for lots of advice, I'm sure. The first issue to address is that there is no parking brake in our rig! We discovered that while we were trying to bring it home from Tampa - we parked at Walmart to get transmission fluid to get us home - my husband watched it as it rolled backwards, fortunately missing any person or property in its path. He jumped in and stopped it - the first mechanic we took it to told us to sue the inspectors that I hired to make sure it was a good deal - fortunately, we got better advice and are starting the process to fix it ourselves with a neighbor who owns his own diesel truck and works on it himself. Glad this forum is available -

Does your coach have air brakes? If so, when you say there is no parking brake, do you mean that you pulled up the air brake parking brake knob and you didn't have brakes or you just didn't know where to look for it? Diesels usually have air brakes athough some, like Alpines used hydrolic. Air brakes that are used while driving are controlled by the brake pedal and are called "service brakes". You also have a parking brake that is set by pulling up on a knob. I'm not familiar with your model and year of coach so I'm just asking a couple questions.

Hello
Thanks for responding with info! I can't make much of it, though because I have no mechanical expertise. The chassis is an oskosh and it is a 92 Safari Serengeti hi-tech edition coach. I inquired and found out that the braking system is hydrolic. I hope this suffices to stop this coach - I have 2 small children to protect. We are going to have a neighbor over today who has a large diesel dump truck and he is going to begin replacing transmission lines - we were told that the brake lines should also be replaced due to rust under the coach which has lived in Fla. for at least 2 years that I know about. There is no parking brake - it was pulled off when it broke, I guess, and never replaced. My husband put it in P for park and there is a lever to push up, but as we discovered in the Wal mart parking lot, and in our driveway which has a hill, depressing the knobs or pulling up or whatever, don't hold the coach - it needs a new parking brake put on along with lots of other stuff.

If park in the transmission didn't hold the coach, you'll be needing to have the transmission overhaulled probably.

Only if the parking gear or parking awl is broken, the gear is attached to the output shaft on a transmission, if the linkage is broken that can be fixed without removing the trans. The Allison transmissions (500, 600, 700 series) do not use an internal park system. You will have to have your parking brake fixed or use blocks. ( not a good long term fix)

more parking break questions

We found the gear attached to the output shaft of the transmission while changing out the lines which went well (prior to a test). So, where do we find linkage and a suitable parking brake assembly? Are these parts still being manufactured? Or are there substitute parts? I guess we need to take it to a shop at this point - I suppose that a regular truck shop will be less $ than a camping world type garage? Anyone have any suggestions?

Can you post pictures of your brake setup? What trans do you have?

My dad and I had an old Ford F700 truck that the parking brake went out on and was gonna be expensive to fix so we installed a line lock in the braking system Line locks are used in race cars and aren't very expensive

brake & tire questions

Thanks for your help with our parking brake problem. I will get my husband to crawl under and take a photo of the broken bracket area he found that he says is the former parking brake. There is a motorized part near the front driver's side by the transmission that is disconnected and also may be involved - the transmission is an Allison AT542. It is an oshkosh chassis - We need to replace the tires and checked with camping world as well as a local tire company - the difference between the quote from the tire co was $1200. cheaper! They had to offer a Sailuns-637 all position radial all steel tire for 230.72 each - camping world told us that we needed the special rv tires - Load range of F - should we consider the truck tire instead of the rv tire? Camping world said they have to be replaced every 5 years and we thought that the extra noise that the truck tire might give won't make much difference. Any thoughts?
