New RV'er from Tennessee

Hello all,

My wife and I bought our first RV back last fall (1993 Gulf Stream Tourmaster 40'). We were looking for a travel trailer and this thing sort of fell into our laps. It needed some work, but the big parts (chassis, running gear and roof) are good. I've known the couple who sold it to us since I was a child, so it's history is known. I'm own a Managed IT company by day, and I restore tractors, etc. as a hobby, so I'm mechanically sound with a decent shop and enough tools to do mostly whatever I need to do.

Since getting the rig, I've been over pretty much the whole thing at least once and encountered a few learning curves along the way. I've replaced all the tires, all the batteries, re-seamed the roof (dicor/eternabond) had the fridge cooling unit rebuilt, put a new gas valve on both and furnace and water heater, updated the inside, put a better backup camera on and installed TPMS. The coach has 60K on it, which I find is pretty normal, even for older RVs. It is a Spartan chassis with the Cummins/Allison running gear, so that should outlast the house portion by a long shot. Haven't really had to do anything to the engine/trans other than regular maintenance items, oil, filters/separators and a fuel stop solenoid.

We were looking to use this rig to get a start in the RV world and do some local-ish trips. Once we get our teeth cut and lessons learned, we will get something a bit newer. We're still many years from retirement, and our kids are young, so we have plenty of time to learn and enjoy.

The coach took it's maiden voyage and shakedown trip last month to a local state park for 4 days and we had a ball! Next trip is T-minus 10 days and counting!

Welcome to iRV2 from your neighbor to the north. I enjoyed your write up all the way to the part where you said "We're still many years from retirement" then I felt sad.

I went to college at Tennessee Tech where I got my engineering degree many many moons ago and Tennessee was one of my top picks for a state to live in. But it wasn't in the cards, and we ended up in beautiful Kentucky. We just got back from Cumberland Gap Tunnel area last week. That was one of my projects!

Enjoy your new to you coach, and have many happy trips
