New UK member Hiring a RV in need of basic guidance

Hi All,
The plunge:
My wife an I have taken the plunge and booked to fly into San Francesco, rent a RV from Cruise America commencing 11 April for 2 weeks with the intention of touring California lakes and coast line.

Who are we:
We are seasoned campers and caravan towers in UK. We don’t intend to ski but are used to hiking and don’t like cities too much. Love people, coffee, food, wine, beer, festivals, and community events but not necessarily in that order!

How to RV basics:
Need some guidance handbook or something to set us out on the right track with an RV. Electric or generator do’s & don’ts ???

Touring :
Difficult to know what’s going to be accessible and what’s not. Where and when can we stay and what to expect to pay.

Outline plan: Arrive pick up RV and visit friends in Windsor 5 nights , then Lake Tahoe 2 nights; Yosemite 3 nights; Monterey 2nights; return to SF 1 night. .

All advise welcome, ‘except stay in UK’

Bring or ship a couple sleeping bags, maybe a couple of cheap pans, and a few basic kitchen tools. When you get here stop at WalMart, buy paper plates, plastic flat ware and the food you want. BTW SFO is not the most friendly place on earth now days. Lots of drugs and vagrants. So plan to get out as soon as possible. Dont concern yourself with generator use. Not likely to have one on a rental MH. As for the rest, the rental company should have the basics already on board. Choose full hookup camp grounds and use them. You will be fine.

Welcome to the forum.

Make some reservations as camp grounds where you want to visit will be full or filling fast.

Enjoy the adventure!

Welcome aboard!

I lurked and browsed for years while renting and shopping to buy. Excellent resources and people available on this site.

You will find enthusiasts for every variant of the RV lifestyle and every price point.

We rented from Cruise America in Orlando, Florida for one month twelve years ago. We were fortunate to have zero charges levied upon return for any defects or damage, but I have heard of others who had bad experiences at other Cruise America locations. Examine your vehicle very, very closely before you complete the rental paperwork. Document every imperfection, every blemish, every scratch. A time-date stamped video recording taken using a smart phone, with a rental agency employee video’d acknowledging the recording, is suitable. Any defect not noted as being present before you take possession may be blamed on you when you return the vehicle and are in a hurry to go to the airport to fly home.

Welcome. If your rental has a generator just get some instructions from the rental company.

Where and how much depends on how you want to camp. Anything from free boondocking to $100 at night high end campground.

Here are a few websites to help you out with where and how much.. Recreation.gov ( national park and other is government campgrounds). Campgroundreviews.com (campgrounds reviews by campers) Goodsams.com is a good General directory just don't believe the ratings. resvervecalifornia.com (California state parks) allstays.com (another General site).

If your plans are firm you might want to make reservations in advance. Especially on the weekends.
Have fun enjoy your trip
