Off to Alaska....in six months
Hi all,
Just saying hello as I am to to IRV2. We are a family of five (six with the dog) driving a Winnebago Vista, 32k. We've had the Vista now for about 2 years. In June 2015, we will heading to Wasilla, AK from California. I've started researching but the more I learn it seems the more I get overwhelmed. there is so much to see and do.
Hope to get good advice and info from our fellow RVers!

Welcome to irv2. I'd suggest you get a publication called the Mile Post. It's a must.

Do an Alaska search here and you'll have enough reading to probably take you right up to the day you hit the road. For those of us who've done the trip a couple times, most have posted of their experiences. It's a great adventure with awesome sights. Don't get overwhelmed....just go with the flow. You'll be making some great memories for the family. Man, 2 adults, 3 kids, and a dog in a 32 footer....that should be an adventure in itself.

Welcome to IRV2
If you could give us some idea on how much time you have and how much of Alaska you want to see.
I did that trip in 2012. I crossed over into Canada the first week of june. Spent so time in the Canadian Rockies. We started on the AlCan some time around the 20th of June. There are many things to see along the way. We crossed into Alaska on the 3 of July. I created a blog and I would be glad to share it with you. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Welcome to IRV2! The best first step is get a copy of the Milepost:
The MILEPOST: Alaska Travel Guide and Trip Planner
It tells you about every mile of the road to and in Alaska. As someone who has lived there for a few decades, it's the best start.
Be aware that snow can fall even in May along the road to Alaska. enjoy your trip - it's a fantastic place!

HI all,
Thanks for all the support. We will be leaving in June and plan to be back by early August or late July.
I have a 2012 edition of the milepost, sent by my sister in Wasilla, that started my Alaskan fever....Is there enough road change to warrant a current edition?

I'm not sure a 3yr. old Milepost would be a major problem. We had a current one in 2007 & again in 2012, and they both almost got us in trouble saying a fuel stop was open, when in fact it was all boarded up. A good rule of thumb is not letting the fuel guage get below a quarter, some will say half, but it's your call. But it's really not to big of a deal. In our experience fuel was available about a 100 miles apart. My problem is I don't normally like to stop until I REALLY need it. Kind of gives the other half something to talk about. I only wish we were going back this year, but we have a grandaughter getting married in late June, so we're planning on 2016.
