question about topography, I70 in Colorado and Utah
We are planning a trip in may to Utah and Arizona with our RV and a 20' trailer. we have some concern about the steepeness of hills coming across on I70 in Colorado. We are heading for Zion, Bryce Canyon, etc. Since we are hauling a load of about 5000 pds, will our RV make it up the Rocky mountain hills on the I70, and going downhill could also be a challenge. My question is,... do any of you RVers know the approximate inclination of the steepest ones. And I assume if have travelled that highway you can also give me all info you can think of, things to watch for (weather) or any other relavant info. Thank you

Don't know the grade percents but that hwy has lots of RVs of all types every time I drive it.

From just west of Denver (mile post 260) to the Eisenhower tunnel (mp 217) it's a pretty steady uphill climb, with a few level or downhill sections total about 6,000 ft elevation change. From there west you're in the mountains, Vail Pass 20 miles west of the tunnel is also a climb and decent, but not too bad. Pay attention to RPMs and temperature gauges, downshift to control speed, use brakes as little as possible. Don't go down faster than you went up, use brakes firmly to bleed off speed, then get off them, don't 'ride' the pedal. If temps go up, stop and let everything cool off before proceeding.

Select "get directions"
Put in your trip (from...to)
Right click on the blue highlighted trip on the map and select "show elevation profile"
Gives all the pertinent stats on max grades and if to select the graph it will show you where in the route the grades are.

Hi:
I ran I-70 many times in a bus, when going up the tranny won't always shift down enough to keep the engine from getting hot so be sure and watch the temp gauge. I have pulled the grades in first gear, not because the engine wasn't strong enough, but the radiator wasn't big or clean enough. I always had the shop wash the rad with a high pressure washer to be sure it was clean.

Slopes are if you drive to the top of the mountains, not if you stay on I-70, I hope.

I've driven I-70 from Baltimore, MD to Sulphurdale, UT and NEVER encountered a 41.4% grade!  Here's a 41% grade on Bradford St. San Francisco!
I don't believe any Interstates exceed 7%, and those are very few and far between.
