Hi all
I just retired from the Army and my wonderful wife bought me a 2005 Winnebago Journey 39F as a retirement gift. We bought the coach from a dealer in AZ (he's a boat dealer, not a RV dealer). He will deliver it to our home in Indiana by the 19th of December. This is our first coach (I have lots of time in tents  ) HE says as long as he keeps it running it will not need to be winterized until it gets here. I say B.S, water freezes..the end. Should I insist it be winterized prior to him rolling out of AZ or will it be OK here in the land of 22 degree nights

First of all, welcome  to iRV2, Indyradar. We're glad to have you here. Congratulations on your new Journey.
There's a lot of below freezing weather between AZ & IN - especially this year with the colder temps having come earlier than usual. Is this delivery person going to guarantee that they will have the heat on 24/7 all the way to IN? If something does freeze up, will this person take care of any damage/repairs that might result from the freezing?
IMO, I would have the coach winterized before it leaves AZ. Besides, you aren't gonna want to winterize (unless you're going to pay someone in IN to do it as soon as it arrives or keep the heat on in it until you do get around to winterizing it) a rig when it's darned cold outside - believe me, been there, done that!

I'd have it winterized in AZ...my concern would be whether or not the boat dealer knows exactly all the right steps to winterize it properly.

I don't know how comfortable I would be buying an RV from a boat dealer! There is alot of differences between the two. I would demand that it be winterized before it leaves Arizona, and then I would have him sign an agreement that he is responsible for any and all damages affiliated with his improper delivery should they occur when you get it flowing in the spring. You will need to leave it winterized all winter, and come spring you don't want any surprises, ie: broken pipes. Good Luck

Congrats on your new rig & Welcome to iRV2!  I feel you have come to the friendliest RV forum on the web -with many knowledgeable RV owners who are willing to give you their opinion and share information whenever a question is asked. 
May I also suggest you visit the Winnebago Forum ...you will find all sorts of Winnebago specific information there. (Ask for some "karma" while there also  )

Indyradar, welcome to iRV2.com. Congratulations on your recent retirement and your new to you Journey motorhome. I am sure you will enjoy this website and forum. You will find we are a group of fun loving RVers that like to help each other where we can. I too would have it winterized; even if I had to pay to have the boat dealer take it to an RV dealer to make sure it is done right. If it is not, it could cost $1000s to repair. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for all the great info. I have asked, and he has agreed to take the coach to the Mesa AZ camping world to have the service performed. He has asked if he could have it winterized, and leave the toilet in use. Can that be done?

The answer to that is NO NO NO NO. The water lines need to either be blown out or filled with the pink RV antifreeze. If the toilet has water, the rest of the coach has water.

Welcome Indyradar to irv2 and congrats on your new MH.
He could use the toilet and flush with RV-anti but no solids stop at rest area for that.

NO WAY! The toilet needs winterized too. It's your coach, don't let any salesman pressure you to compromise it. Besides, I wouldn't want to have anti-freeze diluted urine (assuming that was all that got deposited) hanging around my holding tank all winter until the weather breaks in the spring & I could get it unwinterized. Yuk!    .
If the person delivering the coach to you has to have a potty break on the way up to you, that's what area rest stops are for.
