Just bought a 2000 28' class c dutchman for a song and we are thrilled. Going to pack up my wife, my two year old son, and Spot the beagle, and move to California from PA. Looking forward to any helpful tips you guys may have.

Only helpful tip I can give you is don't move to Taxifornia. When you go to register the Dutchman in CA you will probably find the emissions isn't up to their standards.

Good Luck,
Jon

Use the rig for 6 months prior to setting out. You will find lots of things to fix. Here is a start:
Start with the tires - write down the date each was manufacturd (the DOD number) and replace tires older than what you determine is safe. Install a tire presure monitoring system if it doesn't have one.
Leave it outside to do a good test of the roof - fix all leaks.
Engine, xmission, brake, cooling fluids need to be fresh for such a trip.
Drive it on a windy day - how does it handle?
Camp out in the drive way to start with - learn how to operate all the systems - how long do the batteries hold up when camping without AC power?
Learn the AC and DC electric system, grey and black water systems, refrig, stove, heater, etc. It is more complex than your house.
Good luck - summary: don't rush into the trip. Buy coach-net road service. Read and searchthis site for answers to the issues you uncover.
And - you will need the AC in the desert - check it out as well.

As stated above California has a very strict policy on vehicle emissions. I would check before I drove that far to make sure they will allow the vehicle in the state. They are up to tier 4 engines on anything new and give you a time line to dispose of older engines before the $$$ fines begin. I would start with the department of motor vehicles.

California is a huge state with 2 separate mentalities. Into what area do you intend to move?

Don, life long resident.
