I was looking at all my postings and I seem to be missing postings from the time I registered (01/2000) to sometime in 2001. Were they archived? deleted? lost due to some malfunction? Just curious.

Frank,

Our automation setting is set to prune topics with a last post date older than 1068 days. This is necessary due to available server space and to control the expenses for the leased server.

Ahhhhh... I see, Richard.

What precipitated this question was that I had a link in a current posting to an older one and the link no longer worked. I thought maybe the URL for the target had somehow changed (as this has happened with my avatar several times) so I tried to search for the old posting and couldn't find it.

The 1,068 is an interesting number. When I divide it by 3, I get 356 which is just under a year.

It's too bad there isn't some way to archive those postings. We're losing some great history of iRV2.com. But, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Thanks, Richard!

Archiving them was discussed but funding was the issue that won out.

I'll add this: If someone makes a post in a thread before it hits the 1068th day of inactivity the clock starts all over again. Anyone with an old thread worth saving might want to give it a bump every 2 years or so.

I think the 1068 days was a number picked systemically by our software provider and wasn't intended to equate into any multiple of the conventional methods of tracking time. You know how those computer geeks are, sometimes we can't understand or relate to how they think.

I know very well how computer geeks are being that I was (and still am even though I'm retired) one myself for over 40 years. However, In my days, instead of "geek" or "nerd" we were sometimes refered to as "bit flippers" as, back then, computers had a lot of flashing lights and switches.

Now, how many folks are going to go make postings in their old threads to "reset the clock" now that "the cat's out of the bag" (so to speak)?

With storage so cheap these days (I saw a 1TB drive in the Best Buy ad today for less than $200.00), you'd wonder why there'd be any limitations at all.

I'd better stop here before I open Pandora's Box.
