It used to be the policy of this forum to limit the size of avatars, pictures, graphics, etc. to accommodate those on cell phones, and/or slow connections.

I see some folks with large and multiple pictures in their signatures, some almost full screen, and multiple graphics, etc.

Has this policy been rescinded, or have things just gotten out of hand?

Hi Dirk,

Thanks for bringing up the issue again. I think we had the avatar sizing under control until the unfortunate server crash some months ago. When the disk crash occured, most folks had to reload their avatars and some super sized files were used.

We mentioned this point in the Admin section last night and the moderators are keeping their eyes open for those Avatars that load slowly as large files then resize to the proper thumbnail size. It's relatively easy to swap in the correct file size if the avatar photo is hosted on iRV2. It does become harder if the photo is offsite, but we're doing what we can to speed up the loading for everyone to make it more user friendly.

We'll try to resize them as we find them. Thanks for the note.

Just as an FYI for anyone that does have a avatar, when you upload a photo to the photo section, you should use the URL of the "thumbnail" version of the photo for your avatar. If you use the full size version, it will cause the full size photo to load every time someone views a thread, then the forum software will reduce the size to a thumbnail.

Joe, thanks for the reply.

Don't the large and/or multiple pictures in the body of a post or a signature create the same problems for those on a slow speed connection?

I haven't seen too many oversize avatars, but there are quite a few posts with large pictures.
