Carbon monoxide detector

Any ideas why our carbon monoxide detector won't stop beeping. We have turned off all propane.

Could be low voltage to the unit or, as was my case, an expiration date past by three (3) years. Had the propane system checked to be positive and no leaks. New unit (~$95) has worked flawlessly.

Is it an intermittent beep or steady full alarm beeping?

If it is a steady beeping then it is probably detecting carbon monoxide.

If it intermittent then it could be a problem with the detector or if it is hard wired or plug-in type then it may have a 9 volt battery back-up that is low and needs changing.

Did it activate when your engine or generator had been running? Do you have a diesel powered Aquahot?

Yes check the 9volt battery back up if it has one

What year is your RV?
My propane detector was original on my 2004 motorhome and started beeping last summer. I replaced it and no more beeping.

Carbon Monoxide and propane detectors are not the same thing. Which are we really talking about?

I believe he was talking about CO, and telling you that propane was turned off so there was nothing available to create carbon monoxide.

It was not stated what the CO reading was which I take to mean it is an alarm only. I would never have one without a readout. Kidde makes a nice unit that has a readout and a ten year lithium ion battery.

Two possible explanations:
1. There is some source of CO triggering the alarm. Exhaust gases from outside, or whatever. My coach CO alarm used to go off whenever a neighbor fired up the engine on his model airplane for testing.
2. The sensor on the alarm is contaminated and giving a false alarm. This is the more common cause.

Usually a low battery or low 12v (if external powered) is a unique beep, e.g. every 10 seconds, so that it is easily distinguishable from a real 'high CO' alarm.

I know home smoke detectors do not detect smoke as well after 10 years and should be replaced then so it makes sense that the Co detectors would fail around that time as well. I have about 8 of them to replace in my house, sure glad they make them with 10 year batteries now. No more getting the ladder out each year when they start beeping.

first, replace battery. If still beeping step 2
check the CO Monitor date. it should tell you when it needs to be replaced. Most units will start beeping if they need to be replaced.
Start looking at what may be causing the beep (CO)

Outgassing from an overcharging battery and sewer gasses will also set off a CO and propane detector. Probably some cleaning products will too.

I thought RV CO and propane detectors had to be hardwired. Maybe not.

In our old coach, we had this same issue.
My hairspray would also set it off.
